Well, I finally did it! Although I'll still be doing some limited cross and sponsored posts here until my PR increases on the new spot, I've moved Sojourner's Place to her own domain. Yep! Sojourner's Place is now a dot com!

I welcome all Sojourners ~ new and regulars ~ to my new home. You can even enter the new Sojourner's Place through the Front Door over on Wordpress. Guess, you could say that I've been on a roll!

While the look and address has changed, the message has not. The "truth" is still spoken according to SjP.

sunday inspirations...when the master steps in

Not long ago, I heard a story about a five–year–old boy who loved the piano. Any time he got the chance, he would sit down and fiddle around on the keys. He never had lessons or formal training because he was told that he was too small or too young to play the piano. But in spite of those comments, he continued to practice and practice the only song he knew how to play, "Chopsticks."

One day, the boy's father surprised him with tickets to go to the symphony and hear a world–renowned Italian pianist. This man was one of the greatest pianists that had ever lived. The night of the concert arrived and as they walked to their seats, the little boy saw the beautiful grand piano on stage behind the curtain.

When no one was looking, he snuck over and sat down on the piano bench and began to play his elementary version of chopsticks. About that time, the curtain began to rise and the audience was prepared to see the world–famous, master pianist. Instead, they saw the little boy hunched over the keys playing "Chopsticks." The boy was so caught up in his world that he didn't even know anyone was watching. When he suddenly realized what was happening, he was petrified.

Just as he was about to get up and run for his life, two big arms reached around him and placed two big hands on the piano keys. It was the master pianist. He whispered in the little boy's ear, "Keep playing." As the little boy continued to play his simple rendition of "Chopsticks", this world–renown pianist began to play a Beethoven Symphony piece scored in the same cadence and key. Under the direction of the master, the rest of the orchestra came in.

First, he brought in the woodwinds, then the brass, then the percussion. The boy's father sat there with tears coming down his cheeks. He couldn't believe what he was experiencing. He never dreamed that simple tune he heard in his living room each day would become a beautifully orchestrated Beethoven symphony.

What was the difference? The master stepped in.

Sometimes in life, you may not feel like you have the talent, the wisdom, or the "know how." People may not see your desire or ability, but the good news is: God does. When you use what you have, the Master will step in. He'll put His hands on top of your hands. He'll take what you think is average–average gifts, average talent, average ability–and He'll turn your life into a masterpiece.

For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago (Ephesians 2:10, NLT.)

old school friday...this is dedicated

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "This is Dedicated To".

Now, I'm sure there will be many a love song - and maybe even some not so love songs - posted today as folks remember or pay tribute to the past or current loves of their lives. I admit, that I too thought about doing so and asked my Best Half what I should post. Expecting to hear a suggestion from him that expressed his "obama-type" love for me, he instead went all philosophical on me. Oh well, remember I told ya'll a while ago that we needed to have that second honeymoon. lol

So, with that inspiration failing, I remembered that today is my AKAversary. During the many, many, many weeks of working to get My Pearls, there were two cuts that will be forever ingrained in my mind. Now most will consider these two cuts pure jams back in the day, but I know some women for whom these they bring back different type of memories. In the days before exercising to music became popular, we all learned that What's Going On by Marvin Gaye had a particular type of beat that lended itself quite nicely to a "duck-walk". And then, as the semester quickly passed away, it seemed that it was "Just My (our) Imagination" that we would ever cross those "burning sands".

But, alas we did! So this OSF post is dedicated to my Sorors who share this special date with me. Skee-wee & Pinkies Up!

Much obliged to all Sojourner's who answered the call to action on behalf of Troy Davis on May 19. While I am very appreciative of your participation, the fact that our collective voices may stir the heart and soul of Gov. Perdue to grant clemency to a man who may well be innocent. As I wrote to AfroSpear members:

But, let us not forget that Troy is not the only one on death row in the states or throughout the world. There are those who are in favor of the death penalty and those who are not. But, everyone will agree that no individual should be put to death for a crime that he or she did not commit. On that fact we can and must all agree.

troy davis: a call for clemency

Is the State of Georgia set to put an innocent man to death? The answer to this question is YES, unless Georgia Governor Perdue intervenes.

Troy Anthony Davis has been held on Georgia's Death Row for nearly 2 decades. Convicted of the murder of murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail. Despite the facts that there was no physical evidence tying him to the murder, no murder weapon was found, and 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted or contradicted their own testimony appeals to the highest state and federal courts - including the US Supreme Court - have all refused to hear or denied requests for a new trial.

Most recently, the Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles has voted to deny clemency even though the Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, Leah Ward Sears, in a scathing dissent wrote:

If recantation testimony, either alone or supported by other evidence, shows convincingly that prior trial testimony was false, it simply defies logic and morality to hold that it must be disregarded categorically. A judge should consider the new evidence.

Amnesty International, the organizer of this Global Day of Action for Troy Davis, further states that:

...The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony...Many of these witnesses have stated that they were pressured or coerced by police. One of the two witnesses who has not recanted or contradicted testimony is Sylvester Coles, the principal alternative suspect. Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles. Troy Davis has never had a hearing in federal court on the reliability of the witness testimony used against him.

So, what happens now? Troy's 30-day stay of execution expired on Friday, May 15, 2009 and as such Governor Perdue holds his life - possibly the life of an innocent man - in his hands. As indicated in the online petition to the Governor, he alone has the power "to see to it that the death sentence of Troy Davis is commuted, in order to ensure that Georgia does not put to death a man who may well be innocent."

Sojourners, I urge you to join us in this call to help save the life of a man who may be innocent. You may do so in a number of ways, joining thousands throughout the United States and the world, to bring focus to the empending execution of Troy Davis. Write a post, visit other bloggers participating in this registered Amnesty International blogging campaign, sign the online petition, or see what's been organized in your state or country. Time is running out...but, it has not run out!

Ever try to explain to God to someone? I know that sometimes putting Him into words can be a difficult undertaking - because how do you explain Him? I often think that any attempt or the need to explain who God is, is a result of man having a god-complex. We can't explain, interpret, or predict God. All we can do is to have faith in His Word with the full recognition that HE IS who HE says HE IS. But, in knowing God - you certainly can describe what HE has done in your life and what HE IS like.

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "The Greatest One of All".

I know ya'll swooped by here just knowing that you'd hear some Frankie Beverly and Maze - a ya'll got to know that I was definetely tempted. But, I decided to to another route this week. In keeping with ol' SjP fashion though, I still went old school on you - but, not too far back.

Now, I admit it. I'm a David Ruffin Temptation fan. Never cared too much about Dennis - but, I do love this here cut. Just love the violins. So I vote for this one as the Greatest of All Temptations' cut with Dennis Edwards.

Got a question for you. When "he left" did he leave them a l-o-n-e or a l-o-a-n? LOL! That's gonna mess you up all day...right?

sunday inspirations...one mother's mother's day thoughts

Why don't they talk to me and share their inner-most secrets? They use to when they were younger? Now that they are older, they have their own lives to which I often attempt to pry in order to be a part. Seems, though, that no matter how much prying or gentle prodding I might do - their openness seems to close just at that very moment when I'm feeling a break through.

I look or think about them in wonderment sometimes, hoping and praying that I have given them all that they need to be successful and happy. I am amazed that when I look at them, I still see the babies whose diapers I changed, cheeks I squeezed, toes I counted, and coos I so loved to hear. And I worry about you each and every day no matter how old they get. I know they think they are grown - but, they will forever remain my babies and therefore, it is my prerogative to worry and even pry.

I sometimes long just to hear the words that I am special to you and that you love me. I sometimes long to hear you say "Mamma, lets just hang out today - just us". I wish I could see spend more time with them like we use to. Or just sit around and jaw-jerk. I miss those days...those times. But, I just need to let them know that I'm here, that I'll always be here.

I love them both as only a mother can.

Mamma, lets just hang out on Tuesday! We'll do lunch...do a little jaw-jerking... maybe see a movie or play a little. Just US! And, I'll even let you pry and prod ::smile::

old school friday...soul train

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "Soul Train".

The "Soul Train" hit the Chicago airwaves just one month before my freshman year of college on WCUI. It was our daily answer to American Bandstand. Don Cornelius - the Black Dick Clark - was always too sharp in the multi-color polyester, platform shoes, and big afro. When you' here this theme, you'd know that only love, peace, and sou was going to be happening for the next 30 minutes.

So for all you sojourners with Chi-town roots who actually owned an 8-track, I know you'll enjoy the original theme to the original "Soul Train".

the last shall be first

I recently sojourned across this story. Although there is no indication as to the truth of the story, but given the setting in which the story takes place, it could be.

On a British Airways flight from Johannesburg, a middle-aged, well-off white South African Lady has found herself sitting next to a black man. She called the cabin crew attendant over to complain about her seating.
"What seems to be the problem Madam?" asked the attendant."Can't you see?" she said " You've sat me next to a kaffir. I can't possibly sit next to this disgusting human. Find me another seat!"
"Please calm down Madam." the stewardess replied. "The flight is very full today, but I'll tell you what I'll do-I'll go and check to see if we have any seats available in club or first class.
"The woman cocks a snooty look at the outraged black man beside her (not to mention many of the surrounding passengers).
style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">A few minutes later the stewardess returns with the good news, which she delivers to the lady, who cannot help but look at the people around her with a smug and self satisfied grin:"Madam, unfortunately, as I suspected, economy is full. I've spoken to the cabin services director, and club is also full. However, we do have one seat in first class."
Before the lady has a chance to answer, the stewardess continues..."It is most extraordinary to make this kind of upgrade, however, and I have had to get special permission from the captain. But, given the circumstances, the captain felt that it was outrageous that someone be forced to sit next to such an obnoxious person."
With which, she turned to the black man sitting next to the woman, and said: "So if you'd like to get your things, sir, I have your seat ready for you..."
At which point, apparently, the surrounding passengers stood and gave a standing ovation while the black man walks up to the front of the plane.

In reading the story, Matthew 20:15-16 immediately came to mind: Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

update: global blogging day of action for troy davis

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! As many Sojourners are already aware, May 19 has been designated by Amnesty Intentional as a Global Day of Action for Troy Davis. Bloggers are encouraged to participate in this call to action by writing a post on the 19th to let the State of Georgia know that the whole world is now watching as Troy's stay of execution runs out on May 15th.

If you have not done so already, there is still time to join the growing list of bloggers planning to attend the Global Blogging Day of Action for Troy Davis. If recantation testimony, either alone or supported by other evidence, shows convincingly that prior trial testimony was false, it simply defies logic and morality to hold that it must be disregarded categorically. A judge should consider the new evidence.

African American Opinion: AAPP aka LN Rock created this political and social networking ning for African-Americans. How he keeps up with with AAO and two other blogs, I'll never know. But, I am certainly impressed with this "old school brother who gives his thoughts, opinions and insights on political and social issues of the day".

Inspiring:

Anyway I Have To: His blog handle is The U, this brothers spot is simply inspiring. He writes from the very depths of his being and shares it with us. The U certainly does it and does it anyway he has to. I hope that one day he'll decide to share his writings in a book. I'd certainly be first in line to buy it.

Hagar's Daughters: "For women who find themselves at the well...praying, crying, dancing, & pondering (& the men who join them there)". Anyone not inspired by the title and description of HG's blog simply has no soul. This sister provides a source of inspiration to me to keep on PUSHing. No matter how bad things might seem, there is always something to be thankful for. I truly get inspiration from her strength.

My Brown-Eyed View: My sister Ms Lady Deborah has got to be the most active advocate in the entire sphere. From information on the evironment to genocide to human rights to injustice you will find it here at MBEV.

The Certain Sound: All I got to say is that if and when I ever get to Toledo, I'm going to make it a point to visit Revy Rev's church. I'm going to make sure I get there early so that I can have a seat on the aisle. I have no doubt that his posts and comments are mirror images of his sermons and that Sunday may be the very first time that old SjP here gets the spirit - holy dance and all.

now i know how arnold feels

The other day I decided to get my car washed and waxed. Before going home, I made a quick stop at the convenient store and got a little tickled with the 40-something man in the car next to me admiring the newly washed and waxed black on black muscle car. He was trying to be cool - but I knew he was looking.

As I walked into the store there was a 50-something man walking out who said the obligatory hello - cause that's what African-American men do when they see an African-American woman. Anyway, I get my stuff and go back to the car. I get real tickled as both the 40 and 50-something men are gawking at the car so much so that the 40-something man rolls his window down to say "nice car". The 50-something then gives me a "thumbs up". I simply laugh and put the key in the ignition.

Then it hits me! They were looking, gawking, fantasizing, and drooling at the mouth about the car! Not me! But the car. Damn! There was a time when they would have been looking at me with such wishful eyes. Upstaged by a car. All I can do is shake my head and yes even laugh out loud as I thought about this video I saw a few months ago.

will we finally get an african-american on the supreme court?

It's on now! The real test is about to begin!

The Associated Press is reporting that Supreme Court Justice David Souter is planning to retire! Oh snap! Got a feeling that its about to get ugly!

The 69 year old Souter, has not officially announced his retirement, but an unnamed source (don't you just love these unnamed sources) indicate that the Justice intends to retire in June. And it is quite possible that Justices Ginsburg (76) and John Paul Stevens (89) may also announce their retirements between now and 2012. All three, lean to the left in their court votes and decisions.

If you recall, Justice Ginsburg recently put her bid in for the appointment of another woman to the all but one "boys bench club". So, if the President follows here advise, one of the following women may be joining her on the bench: Solicitor General Elena Kagan, U.S. Appeals Court Judges Sonya Sotomayor, Kim McLane Wardlaw, Sandra Lea Lynch and Diane Pamela Wood; and Leah Ward Sears, chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.

Men mentioned as potential nominees include: Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Harvard Law professor Cass Sunstein and U.S. District Judge Ruben Castillo of Chicago.

I don't know, but just looking at the list, I'm putting my money on Leah Ward Sears since there are no African-American women on the court at this time. Come to think of it, some might say that there are NO African-Americans on the court not.

old school friday...family reunion

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "Family Reunion".

My family has never really had a full-scale family reunion. But whenever there is a family gathering of any sort its just like a reunion - and its all good. So, I've selected three cuts this week that each remind me of a member of my family or a family gathering....and its all good!

still feeling the joy

For obvious reasons, I'm still feeling the joy of the recent unveiling of the Sojourner Truth bust in the U.S. Capitol earlier this week. So, ya'll please indulge me for a bit as I continue celebrating with yet another post on this historic event.

First, I must admit that I was not familiar with the artist who sculpted the Sojourner Truth bust, Artis Lane. I took a look at her website and was struck by the depth of her sculptures and the emotion that seemed to fill them. But to learn that this 82 year old African-American woman was responsible for capturing what I surely believe is and was the essence of Sojourner Truth brought tears to my eyes.

Second, I was moved to be able to actually view the First Lady's remarks during the unveiling made it all so real. Real, not from a stand point of the unveiling itself - but from a stand point that this is a very different time and world in which we live. Who would have thought even a year ago that an 82 year old African American woman would be the first African American to be commission to create a sculpture to be place in the U.S. Capital? Who would have thought that the sculpture commissioned would be the likeness of an African American woman who fought against slavery and for women's rights? And who would have thought a year ago that that sculpture would represent the first African-American woman with a likeness in the U.S. Capital? And who would have thought a year ago that the such an event would be commemorated by an African-American First Lady?

Certainly not me. Yes, this is a very different and changing world we live in today. And no matter what happens in the future, things will never be the same as they were a year ago.

calling all sojourners: global day of action for troy davis

Amnesty International has just released plans for a Global Day of Action for Troy Davis. As I reported here, Troy's latest and last appeal for a new trial was denied and his stay of execution will expire on May 15, 2009. Amnesty International has designated May 19th for groups and individuals around the world to organize demonstrations, vigils, teach-ins or any other public event in an effort to show Georgia that the executing Troy Davis "would be an unacceptable travesty of justice." As such they are asking the assistance of all in agreement with to be both visible and as loud as possible.

In an effort to show Georgia that the whole world is watching, the Global Day of Action for Troy Davis will be marked by a rally on the Atlanta Capital Steps sponsored by Amnesty International and the NAACP. Other activities being organized throughout the globe include information tables, candlelight vigils, letter-writing campaigns, panel discussions, and public demonstrations. Suggested themes of this global initiative include: "Shout from the Rooftops" - emphasize your outrage at the injustice in this case; you could even hold a demonstration on a rooftop; and "We Are Troy Davis" – emphasize your solidarity with Troy.

I am inviting all Sojourners, who are so inclined, to participate in this Global Blogging Day of Action for Troy Davis by writing a post on May 19th. In doing so, include the graphic seen at the beginning of this post as a show of solidarity. This is an official event for the entire blogosphere which I have registered at Amnesty International. Please do not contact the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles directly right now, as doing so could be detrimental to Troy's case. Instead, you are encouraged to contact Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue.

networks to potus: you costin' us money

The broadcast networks are getting a little testy with the POTUS taking up all of their prime-time spots for press and news conferences. According to one of the executive broadcasters, speaking on the condition of anonymity to the Washington Post, their network executives have expressed concern to the White House about the frequency of prime-time news conferences and the financial sacrifice being made to carry the event.

Yes! That's right! The networks are getting tired of the POTUS always being on the television cause its making them lose money. After all, you can't have a "word from our sponsors" when the President is speaking to the Nation. Perhaps they should take a cue from the Fox Broadcasting Network - not the Fox News Channel, because they have said "to hell with that" and told the White House nope we ain't gonna show Obama's 100 day press conference; we gonna show "Lie to Me" instead. HMMMM! Now, isn't that interesting? But, anyway, the unnamed Washington Post exec said the networks are hoping that the President will "be more flexible in working with networks to find the best times to schedule the events".

Is it me? Am I just too sensitive? But, somebody has got to tell me why the President of the United States needs to schedule press and news conferences to accommodate network TV? I mean it ain't like he's trying to have a press conference during the NBA Finals of the Super Bowl. This is of course the President of the United States. And since January 21 all we have heard coming out of the mouths of all of the talking heads is "first 100 days".

Well today is the 100th day of the Obama administration. I for one am looking forward to him defining and defending this period rather than the pundits. After tonight they won't be offering up their critiques of the Obama Administration's first 100 days. They'll be pontificating, analyzing, and jaw-jerking about tonight's press conference.

Once again, proof positive is offered that That One is smarter than most of us - and definitely smarter than the pundits. I'm just wondering when they will realize that.

unveiling of the truth

Today, the bust of Sojourner Truth was unveiled in the during a gala celebration held in Emancipation Hall of the United States Capital.

Created by Artis Lane, the bust was completely funded through private funds ans will remain on permanent display in the underground visitor center's main space, called Emancipation Hall in part because slaves helped build the Capitol.

"We're here because of barriers she challenged and fought to tear down, and paths she helped to forge and trod alone," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said to an audience gathered at the visitor's center to celebrate Truth's legacy and watch Mrs. Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others unveil the bronze bust of Truth.

Now many young boys and girls, like my own daughters, will come to Emancipation Hall and see the face of a woman who looks like them. I hope that Sojourner Truth would be proud to see me, a descendant of slaves, serving as the first lady of the United States of America. First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama

The National Congress of Black Women, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of black women and their families, has pushed for Truth to be memorialized in the Capitol for almost 10 years. In 2006, President George W. Bush signed into law a requirement that a bust of Truth be placed in a "suitable, permanent location in the Capitol." Clinton co-sponsored the measure when she served in the Senate.

am i not human: preventing genocide

As Genocide Prevention Month 2009 draws to a close, we must not forget the atrocities that occur each day throughout the world. Whether Darfur or Cambodia, the taking of human life in an effort to purify a nation, country, or even a neighborhood can no longer be tolerated. As Vice President Biden said while speaking at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum National Tribute Dinner, the United States must see genocide prevention "not just as a moral imperative" but also as a "national security priority." Biden went on to say that President Obama believes that "preventing genocide is not only a representation of who we are as a people but also a very high national priority."

But, how is genocide prevented? On December 9, 2008, the Genocide Prevention Task Force , co-chaired by Madeleine Albright and William Cohen, released a blueprint for US policymakers on genocide prevention.

The blueprint, which concludes that “a core challenge for American leaders is to persuade others-in the U.S. government, across the United States, and around the world, that preventing genocide is more than just a humanitarian aspiration, but a national and global imperative.” In that blueprint, the Task Force called for the development of a new government-wide policy on genocide prevention, which would include the following specific actions designed to better equip the U.S. government to prevent genocide and mass atrocities:

Having the president himself demonstrate that preventing genocide is a national priority, for example by an early executive order, and continuing public statements on genocide prevention.

Creating an interagency Atrocities Prevention Committee at the National Security Council to analyze threats of genocide and mass atrocities and consider appropriate preventive action.

Making warning of genocide or mass atrocities an “automatic trigger” of policy review.

Developing military guidance on genocide prevention and response and incorporating it into doctrine and training.

Preparing interagency genocide prevention and response plans for high-risk situations.

Investing $250 million in new funds for crisis prevention and response, with a portion of this available for urgent activities to prevent or halt emerging genocidal crises.

Launching a major diplomatic initiative to create an international network for information-sharing and coordinated action to prevent genocide and mass atrocities.

Providing assistance to build capacity of international partners-including the UN and regional organizations-to prevent genocide and mass atrocities.

Let us all pray that the President will consider the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities is an action oriented priority of the United States and the United Nations.

hoping breezes take me away in september

Yesterday, I spent time with relatives as we celebrated the 81st birthday of my family’s matriarch. It was a wonderful day of feasting, reminiscing, and even the occasional embellishment of events gone by. A great time was had by all. Whenever we all get together, I always enjoy hearing my cousins’ recount of one of the “second honeymoon trips” they’ve enjoyed during their 40+ year marriage. And I’m always telling my Best Half – who likes to stay very close to home - that we have to “get away” one day before we’re too old to enjoy it and forget what we’re suppose to do.

The young-SjPs are old enough now and there is really nothing that keeps us from re-energizing the fire other than concern about the spending that kind of money in this economy. But, after checking out one of my many fantasy resort sites, I’m thinking that the bad economy is just another excuse we’ve both used over the years. So, I’m thinking that maybe we should just take the plunge and go! But where?

Since I’ve always wanted to go to the Bahamas, I checked out this site with the caption “Super Clubs and Breezes Knows What a Girl Wants”. Must admit that I was a tad hesitant, because it sounded like my name might need to be Stella and just didn’t think the Best Half would like that too much. Anyway, what I found at Breezes.com was a listing of their all inclusive beach resorts . As I sojourned around the site, I was relieved to see that there offerings were perfect for an old married couple like me and the Best Half.

In addition to a wonderful array of all inclusive vacation packages , including the Bahamas, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we fly to Nassau and enjoy each other for 3 nights for just under $1200. For all inclusive resort vacation , we’ll get all of our meals and snacks, unlimited drinks, premium liquor, wine and champagne, activities, entertainment, land and water sports. I know! Sounds too good to believe so I called them to make sure that I wasn’t misreading something or if that was a per person quote.

So, okay, here’s the catch. I’d have to book it before the end of the month and pay the deposit in order to get the $1200 deal for the two of us because they are running a sale. D*mn! Didn’t want to hear that! But! Get this! The representative told me – in his authentic Bahamian accent – that when the sale ends it would cost me about $250 more. You mean the Best Half and I could celebrate #22 (September) in Nassau for less than $1500.00! Well all I can say is that Super Clubs and Breezes Knows What a Girl Wants!

Now all I got to do is to convince my Best Half, whose gotten really boring in his old age, that it’s time to go to Funky Nassau!

sunday inspirations...the call and response

I remember how happy and excited I would be when I'd get a chance to spend a Saturday night at my cousins' house because that meant I'd be going to church with them on Sunday morning. I couldn't wait and wanted to make sure that we got there early because I never wanted to miss the old man who would always be sitting right under the pulpit get up and start singing. He'd sing something - never could really understand what he was singing - and then the congregation would come in singing something else I generally could not understand. All I knew was that I loved the sombre melody and reverence of the singers. It was certainly a departure from the Lutheran church I attended. We just didn't sing or worship like this there. And I must admit, I always wondered why.

It would be years before I learned that what I was listening to was termed "call and response" or Dr. Watts hymns, often taken directly from passages in the Bible and most commonly the Psalms. I understood the "call and response" but didn't understand why they were called Dr. Watts. Now, I know the answer.

Dr Isaac WATTS was an English minister who published several books: Hymns and Spiritual Songs, in 1707, “The Psalms of David” in 1717. The various Protestant denominations adopted his hymns, which were included in several hymnals, at that time.

Missionaries reported on the “ecstatic delight” slaves took in singing the psalms and hymns of Dr Watts.

In his book “The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States” (1842), the White minister Charles Colock Jones recommended highly some hymns of Dr Watts (“When I Can read My Title Clear”, etc.). He wrote: “One great advantage in teaching them (slaves) good psalms and hymns, is that they are thereby induced to lay aside the extravagant and nonsensical chants, and catches and hallelujah songs of their own composing”.

However, in the early 1800s, Black ministers took seriously the admonition of Dr Isaac Watts: “Ministers are to cultivate gifts of preaching and prayer through study and diligence; they ought also to cultivate the capacity of composing spiritual songs and exercise it along with the other parts of the worship, preaching and prayer”. So, homiletic spirituals were created by preachers and taught to the congregation by them or by deacons.

During the post-Civil War period and later, some congregation conducted services without hymnbooks. A deacon (or precentor) set the pitch and reminded the words in half-singing half-chanting stentorian tones. The people called their songs “long-meter hymns (because the tempo was very low) or “Dr Watts”, even if they have not been written by this gentleman.

The particular feature of this kind of singing was its surging, melismatic melody, punctuated after each praise by the leader’s intoning of the next line of the hymn. The male voices doubled the female voices an octave below and with the thirds and the fifths occurring when individuals left the melody to sing in a more comfortable range. The quality of the singing was distinctive for its hard, full-throated and/or nasal tones with frequent exploitation of falsetto, growling, and moaning.

The beats of Dr Watt’s songs were slow, while there are other types of spirituals. These beats are usually classed in three groups: the “call and response chant”; the slow, sustained, long-phrase melody; and the syncopated, segmented melody; “Call and response”. For a “call and response chant”, the preacher (leader) sings one verse and the congregation (chorus) answers him with another verse.

In preparing this morning's Sunday Inspriations post, I learned something even more fascinating than the fact that Dr. Watts was real and that he was white. I invite Sojourners to listen to the YouTube video downloaded from SoulsSurvivor below. I am sure you will find it fascinating as well.

i ain't saying she shoulda done it...but, i understand

Move over! Stop touching me! I was listening to that! That's my shirt and I didn't tell you that you could wear it! That's mine! Shut up! You shut up!

I ain't saying she should have done it - but I understand cause sometimes your kids just get on that very last nerve and the only thing you feel you can do without killing them is to put them out. So, I can't pass judgement on Madlyn Primoff who put her bickering children out of the car. I can't even pass judgement on her driving off and not coming back to get them right away. Like I said, I ain't saying she should have done it - but I understand.

When your "bundles of joy" turn into hormone-filled, smelling themselves, flip mouth, you're so stupid, entitlement-feeling, back-talking, know it all, getting on your last good nerve, thinking their grown "demon seeds" - then sometimes you just feel like there is nothing else you can do but to "go there".

But don't get me wrong. The young-SjP's have never done ANYTHING to make me do something like take them to the police station because the stole something or put them out of the house to keep from slapping the taste out of their mouths or pick up the phone to call 'po-po' to come get you before you beat them down to the 'white meat' or contemplate adding them to my decor as a wall hanging. I mean, the young-SjP's ALWAYS do exactly what they are told when they are told. They NEVER talk back or think the know EVERYTHING. They don't have the SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT that so many young folk their age have. They NEVER have their hands out. They are simply perfect and NEVER EVER get on my one good last nerve.

Yeah! Right! Like I said...I ain't saying you should have done it. But, I do understand.

miles for the cause

They tell me that walking is a great way to help you get in shape and lose some of those unwanted pounds put on during the winter. And as my clothes begin to resemble sausage skin, it is pretty clear that I have a whole lot of extra pounds that I need taken off, and taken off quick. I can’t lie – by the time I get home from the plantation, exercising in the very last thing on my mind to do. But, I’ve got to do something and since I’ve just learned about how me walking might not only my life but also provide support for those in the final stages of breast cancer.

Here’s the deal, BeeWell Miles recently launched a campaign to help the Breast Cancer Network of Strength. The goal of the campaign which, began this year on April 1 and will run through October 31, 2009 is to raise fund to help the BCNS provide emotional support to those who can’t wait for tomorrow’s cure. Bumble Bee will donate $0.15/mile for every mile logged at BeeWellMiles.com (up to $200,000). Last year, BeeWeeMiles donated $150,000 to the Network.

While Tom is working on his latest new invention, the electric rifle, he meets an African safari master whose stories of elephant hunting sends the group off to deepest, darkest Africa. Hunting for ivory is the least of their worries, as they find out some old friends are being held hostage by the fearsome tribes of the red pygmies.

Tom invents the electric rifle, a gun which fires bolts of electricity. The electric rifle can be calibrated to different levels of range, intensity and lethality; it can shoot through solid walls without leaving a hole, and is powerful enough to kill a rampaging whale, as in their steamer trek to Africa. With the electric rifle, Tom and friends bring down elephants, rhinoceroses, and buffalo, and save their lives several times in pitched battle with the red pygmies. It also can discharge a globe of light that was described as being able to maintain itself, like ball lightning, making hunting at night much safer in the dark of Africa. In appearance, the rifle looked very much like its contemporary conventional cousins.

Fictional character, Thomas A. Swift, was the childhood hero of NASA researcher Jack Cover. So mesmerized by the adventures of Tom, Jack developed a real-life electroshock weapon designed to disrupt voluntary control of muscles in 1969; naming it after his hero: Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle. Today, the Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle, or TASER, is used by police to subdue fleeing, belligerent, or potentially dangerous subjects, often when what they consider to be a more lethal weapon would have otherwise been used.
Knowing history ofttimes puts a thing or an occurrence into a very interesting perspective. I find it particularly ironic that a fictional weapon used to bring down elephants, rhinoceroses, and buffalo, and to do battle against red pygmies is now used by police often resulting in the death of its victims. Today, it is not at all unusual to hear of yet another death by TASER electrocution. A teen-ager, a mother, a mentally impaired person, and the list of victims goes on. What was meant to subdue has turned into a deadly weapon of choice. The TASER, IMO, has become taken the place of a rope and tree so often used to subdue those who got out of line for being too uppity. Or in some cases, for sport.

I am sure that many of you will recall these words: "You just had a big-time use of force ... tased and beat the suspect of CHP pursuit, big-time" spoken by Sgt. Stacey Koon on the night of March 2, 1991. I don't recall ever hearing the terms"tased" or "tasered" before the Rodney King incident. In 2008, 72 north Americans died as a result of being TASED. And in the first 4 months of this year, 2009, 16 Americans have died as a result of 50,000 volts of electricity entiring their bodies at the hands of the police. but in 2008 72 North Americans 16 Americans - and in the first 4 months of 2009 have died so far in 2009 ... another 72 North Americans died in 2008 ... all from being tasered with a minimum of 50,000 volts of electricity from the police. Rodney King was fortunate - he lived after that brutal attack.

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "This Song Should Have Never Been Made".

For the last couple of weeks, I've been driving to the plantation listening to the one and only Jimi Hendricks on full blast. Jimi lived only a short 26 years but his music continues to live on. So, needless to say, that there is not one song of his that "should have never been made". But, there is one song - the Anthem of Nam - imo, that should have "never HAD to be made". That song is "Machine Gun".

Okay, so I'm sojourning through the sphere the other night, checking out some news and blog headlines before I retire for the evening. This headline Rights of Women, Children Ignored catches my eye that includes a teaser asking the question: How many women out there feel threatened by having a black woman in the restroom?

Okay! You got me! I got to read this. As I click you know my blood is starting to boil - because who in their right mind would ask such a question in the first place and then ask it in the context of the rights of women and children? Well, after reading and re-reading and re-reading this letter to the editor of the The Daily News of Newburyport of Newburyport, MA, I soon came to realize that the writer was NOT in his right mind at all.

The gist of this letter was in protest a law being passed or discussed in the MA legislature to allow transgender individuals to use public restrooms of the gender to which they are blending. The writer is adamant that allowing transgender men to use public women's restrooms will result in women and children being harmed.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that there are some men who will take advantage of this situation and it will result in harm to women and children.

I'm guessing that the writer is trying to make the point here that the passage of this law will open the floodgates for men to dress up as women and hang out in public restrooms so they can more easily prey on women and children. Now, if that's the case, then I'm wondering how many men have dressed up as women, gone into a public women's restroom for the sole purpose of doing harm on women and children. I'm not saying that it hasn't happened or even that it won't happen, but allowing a transgendered man or woman to use the restroom for which they are blending is not going to stop a deranged man or woman from harming another individual.

But that's not the only reason the writer points to against the law. Here's his second irrational point:

Since women and children, the former who get more urinary tract infections than
men and who also have to deal with periods, may understandably (to all but some
of our foolish legislators) feel the need to shun restrooms where they may encounter men, and since such shunning will result in more medical problems for women and children, thereby resulting in higher medical costs (do you hear me yet, legislators? — I am now speaking your language), then perhaps a better idea would be to have three types of restrooms available: Men's, Women's, and Undecided's. Put a "?" symbol on the third door.

EXCUSE ME!!!??? Look, I've been a woman all my life; and I have two daughters and never - ever - in my entire life have I ever "shunned" a restroom because a man may have used it. Hell, if that were the case, I'd never use the restroom in my own home. While it is certain that women and girls do have more urinary tract infections than men - most women I KNOW - don't like to use public restrooms PERIOD. Because, let's face it - some women are just plain NASTY! That's the reason we were taught to "squat" when using a public restroom. You see, contrary to popular belief - we can do it standing up, too!

So, how does the "teaser" fit into this whole discussion, you ask? Well, the writer basically tries to make the case that as a Black woman I can no longer be denied the right to use a public restroom because "being Black is not a sinful" but "some alternative lifestyle choices are". Now, I'm not EVEN going to go there in this post because there are a couple of other points I want to make. But, just WTH does this man mean by saying "being Black is not sinful" so we got to let you pee with us?

It is quite obvious to me that the man who wrote this letter to the editor is suffering from some extreme homophobic issues. While I do no claim to be aware of all of the issues and concerns members of the gay, lesbian, or transgender community face in their everyday lives. But, I do have sense enough to know that being gay, lesbian, or transgender equate to an individual who preys on women or children. Being gay, lesbian, or transgender DOES NOT a pedophile make. Can't a person just pee in peace!

Ted Bundy, Melissa Huckaby, Michael Magidson and Jose Merel, Allen Andrade, Chester Stiles, Debra Lafave, Melissa Michelle Deel to name just a few - ALL "harmed" women and children. Raped, molested, and even murdered women and children. Not one of them was, or is blending , as a transgendered man or woman. But, each one of them pretended to be something other than what actually were. Each one pretended to be HUMAN. I just wonder where they should have been allowed to pee.

For 158 years, we have waited for the answer. For 158 years, the question has been asked. And, now after 158 years of waiting, America will reply with a loud and resounding YES. YES, Mrs. Isabella Baumfree, YOU ARE A WOMAN!

Much obliged to the decade long efforts of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc., Mrs. Isabella Baumfree, known to us as Sojourner Truth, will finally be memorialize in the United States Capitol April 28, 2009. Continuing to make history 126 years after her death, Sojourner Truth becomes the first African-American woman qith a memorial in United States Capitol. Spearheaded by the late and former president of the NCBW, Dr. C. Delores Tucker, the memorial was completed by current National Chair, Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq. and members of NCBW.

In addition to the unveiling of the Sojourner Truth bust, The Celebration of Truth will also include a presentation of "Ain't I A Woman," by long time NCBW supporter and actress, Cicely Tyson. Others performers will include Lomax Spaulding, Yolanda Adams and Dorinda Clarke Cole; along with a dramatic luncheon presentations by singer/actress MZuri Moyo and a monologue by ABC's Desperate Housewives narrator, Brenda Strong.

This accomplishment has been a struggle, but at the National Congress of Black Women, we have learned that it is from our struggles that we gain our victories. We never gave up no matter what stood in our way. This bust of Sojourner Truth in the U.S. Capitol is an honor to all women, and will forever serve as a part of our history that celebrates the right to vote for all women. Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq., National Chair of NCBW.

Sojourner Truth inspired generations of women to demand equality and who later would dare to reach for the ballot. Her Memorial, the first to a black woman in the U.S. Capitol, is a milestone, not just for African Americans and women, but for all Americans. President Barack Obama.

Well, children, where there is so much racket there must be something out of kilter. I think that 'twixt the Negroes of the South and the women at the North, all talking about rights, the white men will be in a fix pretty soon. But what's all this here talking about?
That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? I have borne five children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?
Then they talk about this thing in the head; what's this they call it? [member of audience whispers, "intellect"] That's it, honey. What's that got to do with women's rights or Negroes' rights? If my cup won't hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn't you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full?
Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him.
If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it. The men better let them

Include BNJ on your blogroll or add a link in the bottom of your posts like we do Technorati, Digg, StumbleUpon, and so on. Cause it’s kind of a shame that when you check out Technorati, BNJ has less than 500 blog reactions with a rank of 24.

With over 1600 Black blogs in the Afrosphere, I’m sure most would agree that BNJ’s numbers should be sky high. C’mon now – let’s show the brotha. And don’t forget to submit your own posts. It’s an excellent way to let your voice be heard.

sunday inspirations...no ways tired

Lately, I haven't had much time to sojourn the blogosphere on a daily basis. So, Saturday evenings are typically set aside for catching up on news and dropping comments. Last night was no different, but with the exception of the Old School Friday picks, the "news" seemed to weigh me down.

With every click, I found myself tiring with the such depressing and tragic news. The young African American woman murdered by an alleged cyberspace stalker/hater over at VP's and WAOD. The suicide and taser deaths at EV. The young woman who asked on nationwide television if being on the receiving end of a carnal pleasure should be put to the 90 day rule over at Native Son.

Taking a break to go pick up the "Social Butterfly" from work, I realized I was becoming quite depressed at the news I'd just read. I thought to myself - what's the use? Nothing is going to change. I wondered if this is what the world looked like before the destruction of the Sodom and Gomorrah or Rome. I kept thinking just how tired I was becoming.

Then, taking one final sojourn, I returned to U's spot and read a brilliant recounting of two near death incidents he'd encountered when he was young. In this post, he asks the question why he was spared. In my opinion, U's life was spared because God was not - is not through with him yet.

God is STILL in control - no matter how bad things are or even appear to be. And while the news can be, and often is, depressing and tragic - I can't get tired or weighed down with or by it. Much obliged U for reminding me of that.

court rejects davis appeal for a new trial

Sojourners, I am sad to report to you that Troy Anthony Davis' appeal was rejected by the federal appeals court in Atlanta on Thursday of this week. In the 2 to 1 opinion, the court ruled that Troy was unable to establish by clear and convincing evidence that a new jury would not find him guilty. Now Troy gets another 30 day-stay of execution to pursue appeals.

I am very confused. It was my impression that the issue was whether or not there was enough new evidence to warrant a new trial - not whether or not a new jury would find Troy guilty. Perhaps, I do not understand the judicial system as well as I should. But this ruling, simply makes no sense to me. And it appears that it makes no sense to the lone dissenter, Judge Rosemary Barkett, who said:

To execute Davis, in the face of a significant amount of proferred evidence that
may establish his actual innocence, is unconscionable and unconstitutional.

Unfortunately, her dissent fell on death ears of Judges Joel Dubina and Stanley Marcus who agreed that:

Davis has not presented us with a showing of innocence so compelling that we
would be obligated to act today.

Yesterday's decision leaves Troy with one more avenue for appeal to the US Supreme Court. The only problem is that they declined to even hear the appeal last year in October. Yet, the family of Troy Anthony Davis has vowed to continue to fight for a new trial.

Troy was convicted of killing off-duty Savannah Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail. The 27-year-old former Army Ranger was shot three times before he could draw his weapon. Davis’ innocence claims have attracted international attention. They rely largely on the recantations of key prosecution witnesses who testified at trial and on statements by others who say another man told them he was the actual killer.

lou dobbs, what you got to say now?

The other day, I was listening to CNN's answer to Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity. Yes, I know - but, I listen to CNN all day on my computer and keep it on when Lou Dobbs comes on for the background noise. Anyway, Lou certainly has a wild hair up his butt when it comes to "illegal" immigrants. And don't even let me go into Faux hosts O'Reilly and Hannity! If there were ever a need for anyone to take a "chill pill" it would have to be Dobbs, O'Reilly, and Hannity fighting over the bottle!

Anyway, I digress. I was talking about Lou "Know it All" Dobbs. On this particular show, Dobbs was ranting as usual but only this time he was ranting about how the "current Administration" was doing nothing to free Capt. Richard Phillips. As soon as the words came out of his mouth, I thought, "HTH do you know what the current administration is or is not doing to rescue Captain Phillips!"

Well, Mr. Dobbs! Guess what! Captain Richard Phillips is a free man! Yes, the current Administration dispatched the U.S. Navy SEALs to rescue him and to take the pirates out. Just because YOU, Mr. Dobbs, are not on the current Administration's Twitter List or one of their Facebook friends does not mean they they are not taking care of the business at hand? Ooooo! As my mother would say, Mr. Dobbs, you make my butt itch!

Even I knew that the current Administration - like every past Administration has done when American are being held hostage - would devise a plan to rescue him. My only hope and prayer were that the plan would be successful and not a failed attempt. Yet, the US Navy SEALs proved once again that they are no joke by successfully rescuing one of their own and taking out three of the four captors.

But, how much you want to bet that Lou Dobbs will find something wrong with the manner in which the mission was carried out or take credit for "telling" the Administration that something needed to be done to rescue Captain Phillips? And I sure that somehow - someway - he will find a way to tie it all in to "illegal" immigrants.

Lou Dobbs...GET A LIFE! U.S Navy SEALs...congrats for a job well done! The Administation...much obliged! Captain Phillips...welcome home and Happy Easter!

sunday inspirations...take the wheel

First and foremost, Happy Easter to you all. May the Lord bless and keep you this day as we honor, revere, and worship the Risen King!

Saturday I was able to get the two young-SjPs to engage in some real house-cleaning almost to my liking. Why they don't see the same dust I do is beyond me - but after a couple of finger-tests they got it right.

Anyway, you can't clean without music and the oldest young SjP had the box blaring. A great mixture of songs that even I enjoyed. A little Jennifer, Beyonce', and even a little of some groups I couldn't even begin to name. Then came the 'country'! Oh Lawd have mercy! Not Country!

I have to admit that I liked the song very much. I'd heard it before - but it took on a whole new meaning for me as I continue my challenge of "keeping a guard over my mouth". So, on this Easter Sunday Inspirations, I'm simply asking the Savior to "Take the Wheel".

My how time flies! I can hardly believe that it's been a year since Sojourner's Place was bestowed the highest blogging honor - in my opinion - in the entire blogosphere. Being admitted into the AfroSpear one year ago today was and remains truly an honor.
I must give a "much obliged" to the Villager who reminded me of this day on my FaceBook page. I remember going over to Electronic Village a year ago for my daily dose and seeing his post welcoming into the Spear. My heart jumped for joy as I ran and told My Best Half that I had been admitted.

Being a member of the AfroSpear remains a great honor. It has allowed me an opportunity to use my blog voice in a collective advocacy in such a manner that makes an important impact on our lives. It provides me with an opportunity to stay informed or what is happening in the world in which I live.

Much obliged to the AfroSpear for considering the voice of SjP worthy of such a powerful voice in the blogosphere.

c'mon woody! you got to leave mary jane alone

Seems Woody Harrelson got into a bit of a tussle Wednesday night with a photographer. But, according to Woody, it's all good because he mistook the TMZ photographer for a zombie.

Harrelson is now being sued by another TMZ photographer for an alleged assault in 2006. But, like Shaggy he says "it wasn't me". But, he doesn't deny be involved in Wednesday's altercation and offered the following explanation:

I wrapped a movie called 'Zombieland,' in which I was constantly under assault by zombies, then flew to New York, still very much in character. With my daughter at the airport I was startled by a paparazzo, who I quite understandably mistook for a zombie. Source

Personally, I think its about time for Woody to leave Mary Jane alone. "She" got him hallucinating.

hey prez! you ain't walked on water yet!

Look Barry, just because you were the first African-American to be the editor of the Harvard Review, and a member of the legislative branches of government on both the state and federal levels, and now the President of the United States - why you think you deserve to get an honorary degree from one of the most prestigious nonflag-ship universities in these here United States? Boy! Have you done gone and lost yo' mind? Don't you know you got to do more than be the first African-American President to be able to put that D-R in front yo' name?

See, I bet ya'll think I'm joking. But, I'm dead serious. President Obama is scheduled to deliver the commencement address at Arizona State University in a few weeks. But, university officials will not be conferring an honorary degree on him at that time because "achievements have yet to rate the honor".

Media Relations Director Sharon Keller of the university sited that, in essence, the President has not yet qualified for an honorary degree from the University of Arizona. In a statement issued to the Associated Press, she states:

His body of work is yet to come. That's why we're not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency.

According to the university's guidelines, the degree is merited by "significant contributions to education and society over the course of a person's career. The question here is, how long is the "course of a person's career"? Sandra Day O'Connor received the honor after serving only 3 years on the Supreme Court and Barry Goldwater only one term in the Senate. But they both were also Arizona natives.

Maybe Arizona is still a little salty because their native son, Lt. Dan, lost the election to That One. Or perhaps that are more than justified, as President Obama has held the highest office in the Land and the most powerful office in the world for less than 100 days. Perhaps after he turns the economy around, ends that war in Iraq and Afghanistan, stops the manufacturing of nuclear weapons, makes everything green, gives everybody who ain't got one a job, and learns how to effectively walk on water his body of work will prove him deserving of an honorary degree from Arizona State University!

having that senior moment

A self important college freshman walking along the beach took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen resting on the steps why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.

You grew up in a different world, actually almost a primitive one." the student said loud enough for others to hear. "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon. We have nuclear energy, ships and cell phones, computers with light speed and many more.."

After a brief silence, the senior citizen responded as follows. "You're right son. We didn't have those things when we were young...so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little sh*t what are you going to do for the next generation?"

The applause was amazing!

old school friday...if my mamma only knew

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "If My Mamma Only Knew". When I first saw the theme, I thought OH LAWD! You mean I have to post a song about something I did while growing up that she still doesn't know about! Now that scared me to death. So, I must say that I was releaved to learn that the interpretation was "songs that mama would not approve of, you know the ones you had to turn off when she walked into a room, or play really really low in the basement..."

Hmmm...after thinking about it, my first thought is really a little bit easier as I really didn't listen to any music that my mamma didn't approve of while I was growing up. But, there is one song that comes to mind that I listened to back in the late 70s that my mother had no idea that Rick James was NOT singing about his woman.

open invitation to continue the debate: alec baldwin show some respect

As many of you are aware, I am a weekly contributor to the Michelle Obama Watch created by Gina of What About Our Daughters. Often a post appears there that evokes much discussion and debate. Such is the case with my most recent MOW post entitled "Alec Baldwin: Show Some Respect".

Little did I know that the following statement would result in a debate that would take a turn that to what some might perceive as a generational war of words:

But, I do know that it is a very sad commentary about our society when it is thought to be a good idea for the First Lady to appear on a sitcom as the love interest of a man who can’t seem to keep a job and known for “declaring that he’d funded a “gay bomb” that makes enemy soldiers want to have sex with each other“.

I have invited the commenter with whom I have had a "lively" discussion to continue the debate here rather than at Michelle Obama Watch; as MOW is not - in my opinion - the place for the level to which I believe our debate was sinking. But, this is SjP's Place where I am more than capable and quite eager to tell MY TRUTH and defend it.

So here are my responses to the last issues or questions posed to me:

1. are you not saying that you think it is disrespectful and inappropriate for Alec Baldwin to ask Mrs. O to appear on the show to play a questionable character, and that it speaks to our society that he finds this is okay to do? (if this is the point you are trying to make, then I did not “miss the point of the post” as you claim)

No, I am NOT SIMPLY saying that it is disrespectful or inappropriate for Alec Baldwin to ask the First Lady to appear on the show. And YES, you did miss the point of the post. My point remains the fact that he thought it perfectly okay to do so is a sad commentary on where we are as a society for him to think it appropriate.
It is about the fact that we have entered a time when it is considered by many that proclaiming a desire to have sex with a First Lady of the United States; or implying that a President of the United States is saluting something other than a marine; or attempting to delve into a First Couple's intimacy to be good fodder.
This is the commentary of which I speak and Baldwin's "request" is just another illustration. One that is so much larger and far less shallow than an actor trying to beef-up his ratings on a sitcom.

2. So appearing on Jay Leno, ESPN and shows of this nature ridicules them in YOUR eyes, but not to the eyes of a majority of Americans who tuned in to these shows to watch him, because to me personally, it humanizes him, and does not make him any less “president.”

My exact words were: ...our leaders should not be put in situations where they might be held up for ridicule to the rest of the world no matter how small it may seem. To do so, marginalizes the office held as well as the person holding that office. How you got out of that statement that appearing on such shows ridicules them in MY eyes is beyond me.

3. ...So these stale ideas that he should be held on a pedestal is old, and outdated, and im glad he is opening up these new venues for the post.

I don't have an issue with the POTUS or FLOTUS utilizing new and innovative ways to connect with the citizenry or the world. Frankly, I am taken aback for your continued charge that I do. This is of course 2009, where the information highway is instantaneous rather than delivered by the pony express. But, regardless of the venue used by the POTUS,the office of the President of the United States will always be on "a pedestal" regardless of who he or she may be.

4. If you are unable to respond to my critisim, then fine, but to blame your inability to respond to my critique on my age, and the implication that I am somehow too young and/or immature to understnad, what you are trying to say is a cheap cop out, and perhaps speaks about you.

Your criticism? How interesting. I thought you were attempting to provide an explanation for your opinion. A critique is something that is generally offered by an expert in a particular area or discipline upon request. I did not solicit a critique from you - nor do I consider your comments any more than your opinion. One which you are certainly entitled to. Your opinion, however, is shaped by your life experiences to date which provided me with some context to your frame of reference. No more - no less. It is unfortunate that you felt it to be a cheap cop rather than my understanding, of where you are - your mind set - your frame of reference at this point and time in your life.

Finally, it is truly unfortunate that you took my congratulatory comments for your academic accomplishments as well as those in reference to your age as condescending. Had I wanted to be condescending or "put you in your place" as you imply, my comments would have been much more direct and certainly much more specific. Believe me - I can and will "go there" when and if the situation and circumstances warrant such action. But, our exchange over at MOW was NOT that situation or circumstance. As it is important for me to "leave the pile higher than I found it" to have done, as you contend, would have been contrary to who I am as mentor, educator, mother or even a blogger.

I look forward to your comments.

Cleashindra Hall

Cleashindra Hall, an honor student, has been missing since 1994. She was last seen leaving her place of employment, a doctor's home office. Cleashindra stands 5'8" tall, weighs 120 pounds and has dark short hair, dark eyes and a surgical scar on her left knee. She was last seen with her hair in a ponytail, wearing a white shirt and short set with navy polka dots and stripes, white socks and small stud earrings.

Police urge anyone with more information regarding the whereabouts of Cleashindra Hall to call the tip line at 870-543-5111. More than $10,000 in reward money is offered.

Cleashindra's case was recently featured by Nancy Grace (believe it or not!) Cold Case producer, Rupa Mikkilineni.

Sojourner's Place is proud to present this series entitled: Ain't I a Woman? A Sojourner's Salute. Each post will present an African-American woman whose greatness and impact was or is largely overlooked by the history books or media. I hope you will find this series to be enlightening, educational, and inspirational in celebration of the lives of African-American women who made and are making a difference.

Old Elizabeth 1766-1863

Born a slave in 1766 in Maryland, her parents were also slaves. Her father could read, and read to her frequently from the Bible, but Elizabeth remained illiterate.

At age eleven, Elizabeth was sold to a new owner who lived some miles from her family; Elizabeth was lashed for returning to visit her mother, and it was after this that she received a spiritual call to become an evangelist.

After a short time reunited with her mother, Elizabeth was sold again. Her religious visions continued. A fourth owner freed her in her 30s; he did not believe in slavery for life.

At the age of 42, in Baltimore, Elizabeth began a career as a religious evangelist, preaching though she was discouraged from doing so, especially by men who did not believe that women were permitted by the Bible to be preachers. She traveled to Virginia, and as far as Canada. She often had a warmer reception by Quakers than by others.

At the age of 80, Elizabeth moved to Michigan, and during her four years there, founded an orphanage for black children, getting around opposition by staffing it with white teachers. At 87, she moved to Philadelphia where, in 1863, she published an autobiographical account, Memoir of Old Elizabeth, A Coloured Woman. It was republished after her death by Quakers, retitled as Elizabeth, A Colored Minister of the Gospel, Born in Slavery. Source

One of the first things to go when you enter mid-life and qualify for your AARP card and senior size coffee at McDonalds is your memory. And I of course am no exception to the inevitability. So, I am begging the forgiveness of Mimi, StaciPC, and The U who all honored Sojourner's Place with two amazing awards a while back. My tardiness in passing these awards on is certainly no reflection of my sincere appreciation for the recognition. Please know that I am MUCH OBLIGED! VERY MUCH OBLIGED!

1. Don't have to tell you that these are pretty rough economic times. But, if your able, PLEASE buy some stocks. Like the POTUS said a few weeks ago, now is the time while you can still get into the market relatively cheap. I'm not talking about thousands of dollars - just a couple of hundred. Trust me, you'll be very glad you did.

2. I know that close only counts when playing horse shoes, but hey - that Korean missile came a little bit too close for comfort. Look, Il has been telling us for the last 7 years that he had a missile aimed right at our back yard. At what point in time do we take him seriously? Do we have to wait until he's knocking on the door? Help me understand why we and the UN just don't take him out!

3. Columbine, Virginia Tech, Northern Illinois University, Pittsburgh, Binghamton and the countless other violent killings that we don't see on national news were all committed by deranged people with guns. Yet, any real discussion regarding gun control in this Country always seem to end with the cliche"Guns don't kill people. People kill people". Although a true statement, it should be amended to "people kill people with guns". And the fact of the matter is that all too often the gun in the hand of some deranged person is the reason why innocent people are killed. This is a sad commentary for our Country when the right to bear arms is overshadowed by the right to live. None of these victims did anything to cause their deaths - but, the right of the assailants to bear arms was certainly the result.

4. The Grim Sleeper: I learned a few weeks ago from my blogging sister, Ms Lady Deborah, about a serial killer that has been murdering Black women in the Los Angeles area for nearly 25 years. Many bloggers in the Afrosphere voiced their outrage over the fact that a killer has been running rapid but under the radar of mainstream media. The rants and rumblings must have paid off as CNN now has dedicated an entire site to this case. They are requesting assistance in helping to solve the case of the Grim Sleeper. I know...I know..., but now at least the information is out there and lets all pray that this maniac is caught before someone else dies.

5. Damn! What you want from the man? He got a trillion dollars to help jump start the world economy - what more you want? Personally, I wondering what else he might have accomplished if he'd been at the top of his game. He reminded me of that game Michael played when he had the flu and only scored 38!

6. C'mon now! Let Madonna adopt the child. What's the big deal? Am I missing something here?

7. Troy Anthony$ Davis is still waiting to hear about his fate; the Scott Sisters got life sentences for allegedly stealing $11; and Chioma Gray and Adjir Desar are still missing. And that's all I got to say about that!

sunday inspirations...freeing my mind

God is not through with me, yet. Yes, we're still talking - and I must admit that I'm doing a whole lot more listening and a lot less arguing. It's amazing just how quickly the fog clears when you let go and let God. So, needless to say, I'm feeling better - and its not as hard to keep my mouth shut as I thought - especially when you have the Gatekeeper Psalm as a screensaver (lol).

In addition to working on the mouth, we're dealing with the mind. Ya'll know that devil tries to get you any way he can; and if he can control your mind and your thoughts then he will be successful in controling your life. So, my lesson for this week is, as taught by Bishop T.D. Jakes is to Free My Mind.

Psalm 118: 17-29

I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. in honor of the man named king

On April 4, 1968, the man we called King, was taken from our midst. For many, he was a Dreamer, for other a Drum Major, still other saw him as a savior of sorts. His message was one of freedom and equality. His calling was to do God's Will. Yet, a sniper's bullet silenced silenced this gentle soul in a attempt to silence his voice, his dream, his calling. What a futile and senseless attempt. For a dream, albeit deferred, does not always shrivel or dry up...sometimes it festers and runs...and sometimes it explodes.

I'd almost forgotten what its like to watch the Leader of the Free World answer questions coherently and in complete sentences using real words. Over the past 8 years, I'd gotten so use to watching the former president stand before the entire world as I cringed with his every word.

Needless to say that watching our current President of the United States, Barack Obama, answer questions from the international press corps made me very proud. Finally, we have a leader who, by all accounts is respected by leaders throughout the world. A true leader who realizes that being President of the United States is not akin to being a cowboy in a bad television series.

Thank you Mr. President! You did us all proud! And Mrs. Obama - and with all due respect to the First Lady - YOU GO GIRL!
