Sojourner's Place

old school friday...one hit wonders

Posted by SjP in ,

It's Friday! And that means its time to do some finger popping and head swaying as we go way back with some real old school music. I'm excited about this one, cause I've been wanting to post this one by Jan Bradley for a real long time. This is one of the "Six Degrees of Separation"-things that allows me to say that I kinda knew her way back in the day.

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! I know! Many of y'all ain't never heard this cut before or heard of Jan Bradley. That's because, unfortunately, this was Jan's only record to hit the charts. But got her on American Bandstand with Dick Clark. She just couldn't compete with the likes of Mary Wells. So y'all sit back and enjoy some real old school - like I usually do. LOL!

I know the song! I haven't heard it in many years, but it was actually a moderate hit in the early early 60's where I grew up (Michigan). I think she might have been able to compete if Smokey Robinson had been writing her songs (like Mary Wells). Good pick!

Excellent choice and props for not going for the obvious. I've enjoyed this song ever since I first heard it while listening to oldies radio as a kid in the early 80s. The fact that many people have commented that they never heard of "Mama Didn't Lie" is a testament to the decline of oldies radio over the years. This is a great tune that deserves more airplay.

Since I knew that Curtis Mayfield wrote "Mama Didn't Lie", I was wondering why he didn't pen more songs for Jan which might have led to more hits. After looking it up in this book I have (The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders), it turns out that Mayfield and Jan's record label (Chess) parted ways over a dispute concerning publishing rights. :-(

Again, nice selection on your part.

@ Malcolm, I always try to do a little something different and outside the box here at SjP's on OSF. And what you say about the rif is correct.

October 28, 2008 at 11:12 PM

rif?

October 29, 2008 at 12:14 AM

@ Malcolm, You said: "it turns out that Mayfield and Jan's record label (Chess) parted ways over a dispute concerning publishing rights." I said: "rif is correct". Forgive the misspelling. LOL
