Yesterday, I spent time with relatives as we celebrated the 81st birthday of my family’s matriarch. It was a wonderful day of feasting, reminiscing, and even the occasional embellishment of events gone by. A great time was had by all. Whenever we all get together, I always enjoy hearing my cousins’ recount of one of the “second honeymoon trips” they’ve enjoyed during their 40+ year marriage. And I’m always telling my Best Half – who likes to stay very close to home - that we have to “get away” one day before we’re too old to enjoy it and forget what we’re suppose to do.
The young-SjPs are old enough now and there is really nothing that keeps us from re-energizing the fire other than concern about the spending that kind of money in this economy. But, after checking out one of my many fantasy resort sites, I’m thinking that the bad economy is just another excuse we’ve both used over the years. So, I’m thinking that maybe we should just take the plunge and go! But where? 
Since I’ve always wanted to go to the Bahamas, I checked out this site with the caption “Super Clubs and Breezes Knows What a Girl Wants”. Must admit that I was a tad hesitant, because it sounded like my name might need to be Stella and just didn’t think the Best Half would like that too much. Anyway, what I found at Breezes.com was a listing of their all inclusive beach resorts . As I sojourned around the site, I was relieved to see that there offerings were perfect for an old married couple like me and the Best Half.
In addition to a wonderful array of all inclusive vacation packages , including the Bahamas, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we fly to Nassau and enjoy each other for 3 nights for just under $1200. For all inclusive resort vacation , we’ll get all of our meals and snacks, unlimited drinks, premium liquor, wine and champagne, activities, entertainment, land and water sports. I know! Sounds too good to believe so I called them to make sure that I wasn’t misreading something or if that was a per person quote.
So, okay, here’s the catch. I’d have to book it before the end of the month and pay the deposit in order to get the $1200 deal for the two of us because they are running a sale. D*mn! Didn’t want to hear that! But! Get this! The representative told me – in his authentic Bahamian accent – that when the sale ends it would cost me about $250 more. You mean the Best Half and I could celebrate #22 (September) in Nassau for less than $1500.00! Well all I can say is that Super Clubs and Breezes Knows What a Girl Wants!
Now all I got to do is to convince my Best Half, whose gotten really boring in his old age, that it’s time to go to Funky Nassau!

They tell me that walking is a great way to help you get in shape and lose some of those unwanted pounds put on during the winter. And as my clothes begin to resemble sausage skin, it is pretty clear that I have a whole lot of extra pounds that I need taken off, and taken off quick. “In business, you have to act when the opportunity is presented, and that is now.” Derrick S. Boone, Ph.D. As you may recall, during President Obama’s address to Congress Tuesday night, he asked every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training.
This can be community college or a four-year school; vocational training or an apprenticeship. But whatever the training may be, every American will need to get more than a high school diploma. And dropping out of high school is no longer an option.
Easier said than done, right? Because even if you are willing to “take on the challenge” you got to be concerned about just how you would pay for this one or more years of higher education.
Well, for those of you who have thought about pursuing a graduate degree in Business, Wake Forest University might just be your answer. I learned the other day from a colleague that Wake Forest has a tremendous opportunity available that is “free for the taking”.

The Master of Art in Management program is designed specifically for liberal arts majors only. The MA degree program is a 10 month intense study of the basic functional areas of business. After graduation and working for approximately two years, all MA graduates are eligible to apply to Wake Forest as part of the MA/MBA joint degree program and get the MBA in one year. The new Dean, Steve Reinemund, has created a new scholarship for diverse students pursuing the MA degree called the Corporate Fellowship.
The Corporate Fellowship provides full tuition and a $21,000 stipend to cover living expenses. Additionally, each Corporate Fellow will participate in a practicum. The practicum has two components, educational and professional development. Each student will be assigned a mentor that is a high level executive with their sponsor corporation. The mentor will oversee an educational project covering 4 of the functional areas of business using their own corporation as the subject. The student will visit the corporation 3 - 4 times during the program to present his/her results of their research project. Additionally, the "professional development" component of the fellowship provides career coaching and leadership development for the students. While time is something I don’t have a whole lot of these days, I did finally get a chance for a little self-indulgence and tried out a new product that I was asked to review. The product is a hair-removal system that is described as pain free and removes hair instantly.
The product, Smooth Away, came in a package containing a travel case, large and small applicators, large (5) and small (5) applicator pads, and a tube of moisturizing cream to help keep the hair away. After reading the directions, I decided to try it on my chin cause when women get to be my age, you don’t want to go around looking like the bearded lady. Anyway, I digress…
So, I use the small applicator and pad on my chin by gently buffing with a little pressure going clockwise 3 times and then counter-clockwise three times. Took a bit, but lo and behold, after about 5-8 minutes all the hair was gone! Then I applied the Smooth Away moisturizer on the area as directed.
Not bad! Not bad at all! Sure did beat using the tweezers – even though it did take a little more time to do than I would have like. But, then again I really needed a little pampering – so it was cool.
So, what do I think? I think its worth the $9.99 cost. And, the young-Sojourners must think so, too since they’ve been trying to get their hands on the sample I received. Even my Best Half, after reading that men can use it, too got caught with applicator and pad in hand trying it out on his leg. I told all three of them that this one was MINE and to go buy their own at Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, or Sally’s. You can check out more info on Smooth Away here.

The triumphs of the civil rights movement, especially the role of Martin Luther King Jr., are chronicled, as are the recent challenges facing blacks in urban America. The centrality of blacks’ self-initiated activities in the making of African American history is not always apparent, and their active role over the last two hundred plus years in defining and redefining the very concept of America and Americans is usually not fully appreciated.(Sterling Publishing 2009)

I’ve got to admit that until the past presidential campaign, I had no idea what it meant to be “green”. Now, even My Best Half is talking about what we can do as a family to support President Obama, help save our environment, and keep a little more of our money in our pockets. We’re really serious about looking into every aspect of our everyday lives to determine what we can do as a family. Even talking about our next car – if can ever afford to get one – being a hybrid.
So, since I know little to nothing about hybrid cars I decided to do a little research and found a pretty good site called The Car Connection. This site provides excellent news and opinions on the latest, hottest, greenist and fastest new vehicles on the market. You can also find out what new vehicles we can expect to see on the road.
There is a fairly comprehensive list of new and used cars classified as “green” automobiles. From BMWs to Volkswagons, I found reviews of cars built to save money and the environment. In addition, you can also search according to price range or by miles per gallon.
Although, we haven’t quite decided to go the hybrid route yet, The Car Connection is a great place to find out more about any green or hybrid cars on the market.

I guess it’s about time for ole SjP to move into the 21 century when it comes to listening to music. While I’m not still stuck in the dark ages with a collection of 8-tracks; I have yet to “move into the light” by getting into a new groove by considering the purchase of a digital audio player. I’m thinking it’s about time to take the plunge.
The young-SjP’s tell me that if I’m going to get one of these little music players to download all those real Old School Friday jams featured here each week, that I’ll want to also buy something to “dock” it into. And I think the Jensen JiMS 525i is just what I’m looking for. It comes equipped with an alarm clock, HD radio, and a remote control all small enough to fit on my kitchen counter or in my office. It has a whole lot of other features, too that will work with the iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod classic, iPhone, iPod 5th generation, and iPod 4th generation. So, it seems that the Jensen JiMS 525i has everything and more.
In addition, I can use my iTunes Tagging that will let me take my music with me where ever I go (yes I do ITunes). Oh yeah, did I mention that the radio is HD. For me that will mean that I’ll have access to 14 stations broadcasting now in my area with 9 new music stations coming soon.
Yep, I’m about to move on up into the 21s century and buy myself a DAP and Jensen JiMS525i for Christmas. And I think it’ll stay at the office cause you know those young-SjP’s will be trying to claim it as their own.
