old school friday...this is dedicated

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "This is Dedicated To".

Now, I'm sure there will be many a love song - and maybe even some not so love songs - posted today as folks remember or pay tribute to the past or current loves of their lives. I admit, that I too thought about doing so and asked my Best Half what I should post. Expecting to hear a suggestion from him that expressed his "obama-type" love for me, he instead went all philosophical on me. Oh well, remember I told ya'll a while ago that we needed to have that second honeymoon. lol

So, with that inspiration failing, I remembered that today is my AKAversary. During the many, many, many weeks of working to get My Pearls, there were two cuts that will be forever ingrained in my mind. Now most will consider these two cuts pure jams back in the day, but I know some women for whom these they bring back different type of memories. In the days before exercising to music became popular, we all learned that What's Going On by Marvin Gaye had a particular type of beat that lended itself quite nicely to a "duck-walk". And then, as the semester quickly passed away, it seemed that it was "Just My (our) Imagination" that we would ever cross those "burning sands".

But, alas we did! So this OSF post is dedicated to my Sorors who share this special date with me. Skee-wee & Pinkies Up!

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "The Greatest One of All".

I know ya'll swooped by here just knowing that you'd hear some Frankie Beverly and Maze - a ya'll got to know that I was definetely tempted. But, I decided to to another route this week. In keeping with ol' SjP fashion though, I still went old school on you - but, not too far back.

Now, I admit it. I'm a David Ruffin Temptation fan. Never cared too much about Dennis - but, I do love this here cut. Just love the violins. So I vote for this one as the Greatest of All Temptations' cut with Dennis Edwards.

Got a question for you. When "he left" did he leave them a l-o-n-e or a l-o-a-n? LOL! That's gonna mess you up all day...right?

old school friday...soul train

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "Soul Train".

The "Soul Train" hit the Chicago airwaves just one month before my freshman year of college on WCUI. It was our daily answer to American Bandstand. Don Cornelius - the Black Dick Clark - was always too sharp in the multi-color polyester, platform shoes, and big afro. When you' here this theme, you'd know that only love, peace, and sou was going to be happening for the next 30 minutes.

So for all you sojourners with Chi-town roots who actually owned an 8-track, I know you'll enjoy the original theme to the original "Soul Train".

old school friday...family reunion

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "Family Reunion".

My family has never really had a full-scale family reunion. But whenever there is a family gathering of any sort its just like a reunion - and its all good. So, I've selected three cuts this week that each remind me of a member of my family or a family gathering....and its all good!

Dysfunctional as we may be - that's what make us Family. And wouldn't trade 'em for nothing. Too much support...too much encouragement...too much love...and way too many good "reunion" memories.

For the last couple of weeks, I've been driving to the plantation listening to the one and only Jimi Hendricks on full blast. Jimi lived only a short 26 years but his music continues to live on. So, needless to say, that there is not one song of his that "should have never been made". But, there is one song - the Anthem of Nam - imo, that should have "never HAD to be made". That song is "Machine Gun".

Most of you know that my favorite group is Frankie Beverly amd Maze and I'm quite partial to Chaka Khan. But, it would be way too easy and predictable for me to post either one of them.

old school friday...if my mamma only knew

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "If My Mamma Only Knew". When I first saw the theme, I thought OH LAWD! You mean I have to post a song about something I did while growing up that she still doesn't know about! Now that scared me to death. So, I must say that I was releaved to learn that the interpretation was "songs that mama would not approve of, you know the ones you had to turn off when she walked into a room, or play really really low in the basement..."

Hmmm...after thinking about it, my first thought is really a little bit easier as I really didn't listen to any music that my mamma didn't approve of while I was growing up. But, there is one song that comes to mind that I listened to back in the late 70s that my mother had no idea that Rick James was NOT singing about his woman.

old school fridays...if i were a boy

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "If I Were a Boy". Mrs Grapevine and Ms Marva, ya'll really came up with a hard one this week and it will be very interesting to "hear" the interpretations.

Okay, now if old SjP was a boy, it certainly would have been a whirlwind experience to have had the talent to play football at the professional level playing on the 1985 Chicago Bears World Championship team. But to be really honest, if I were a boy I probably would not have the same appreciation for Willie Gault's moves in this video. Love to watch that boy whirl!

Ladies, just how many times have you wished that your man would sing a song to you that just made you that just makes your heart jump - your knees quiver - and, well you know what I'm talking about. Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "I Had a Bad Day at Work". What an appropriate theme to end this week on My Side of he Plantation cause it has been hell! So, this OSF selection is a reflection of my entire week...to be honest, its a reflection of the last couple of years.

Now, it is fitting that I post this cut for my OSF pic because it's been going bouncing around my head all week and is just perfect for this week's theme. In fact there are certainly days when I want to turn it up full blast, jump up on my desk, and scream the lyrics at the top of my lungs. But, considering my office is right next door to legal counsel I don't think that would be a good idea. But just thinking about it makes me feel so much better.
