stay of execution order for troy davis

Posted by SjP in

After the Supreme Court refused to hear the Troy Davis appeal for a new trial, Georgia scheduled a new date for his execution - Monday, October 27. However, this morning the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay of execution. Many Sojourners have been following this story, writing letters, and signing petitions urging that Troy's execution be stayed. Right now, I have no additional details on this developing story.

All I can say is God works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform and that God is Good All the Time and All the Time God is Good!

UPDATE:
@ 12:58P, 10/24/08

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a 25-day stay so Davis' legal team can file a new habeas corpus brief with a lower court. Davis' attorneys will argue that his execution would be a violation of the 8th Amendment. The amendment reads, "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

Obliged to you for hearing me,
and now old SjP ain't got nothin' more to say...

4 sojourners hollin' back

Yes, the lord works in mysterious ways. I never thought this elite core of racist Georgia judges would give Troy a stay of execution.

I posted on it at daddyBstrong.blogspot.com, providing an article from a Washington news outlet. Ideally, the court would have ordered a new trial. But at least Troy will be alive a while longer. Great news for now!

Why are they using the 8th amendment? Are they buying time?

Never forget a winter morning in Paris, 1971, when the radio broadcasted the new of the (last) execution on the guillotine.
Yes, the last.

@ MacDaddy, much obliged for the link. I think the GA judges made a decision to avoid being called racist by a whole lot of people including the Pope.

@ ClnMike, I thought the same thing with respect to the 8th amendment. Just hope they know what they're doing.

@ g@ttogiallo, much obliged for stopping by. Don't be a stranger. Do you think we'll ever get there?
