Well, I finally did it! Although I'll still be doing some limited cross and sponsored posts here until my PR increases on the new spot, I've moved Sojourner's Place to her own domain. Yep! Sojourner's Place is now a dot com

I welcome all Sojourners ~ new and regulars ~ to my
new home. You can even enter the new Sojourner's Place through the Front Door over on Wordpress. Guess, you could say that I've been on a roll!

While the look and address has changed, the message has not. The "truth" is still spoken according to SjP.

old school friday...this is dedicated

Posted by SjP in ,

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "This is Dedicated To".

Now, I'm sure there will be many a love song - and maybe even some not so love songs - posted today as folks remember or pay tribute to the past or current loves of their lives. I admit, that I too thought about doing so and asked my Best Half what I should post. Expecting to hear a suggestion from him that expressed his "obama-type" love for me, he instead went all philosophical on me. Oh well, remember I told ya'll a while ago that we needed to have that second honeymoon. lol

So, with that inspiration failing, I remembered that today is my AKAversary. During the many, many, many weeks of working to get My Pearls, there were two cuts that will be forever ingrained in my mind. Now most will consider these two cuts pure jams back in the day, but I know some women for whom these they bring back different type of memories. In the days before exercising to music became popular, we all learned that What's Going On by Marvin Gaye had a particular type of beat that lended itself quite nicely to a "duck-walk". And then, as the semester quickly passed away, it seemed that it was "Just My (our) Imagination" that we would ever cross those "burning sands".

But, alas we did! So this OSF post is dedicated to my Sorors who share this special date with me. Skee-wee & Pinkies Up!

sunday inspirations...one mother's mother's day thoughts

Posted by SjP in ,

Why don't they talk to me and share their inner-most secrets? They use to when they were younger? Now that they are older, they have their own lives to which I often attempt to pry in order to be a part. Seems, though, that no matter how much prying or gentle prodding I might do - their openness seems to close just at that very moment when I'm feeling a break through.

I look or think about them in wonderment sometimes, hoping and praying that I have given them all that they need to be successful and happy. I am amazed that when I look at them, I still see the babies whose diapers I changed, cheeks I squeezed, toes I counted, and coos I so loved to hear. And I worry about you each and every day no matter how old they get. I know they think they are grown - but, they will forever remain my babies and therefore, it is my prerogative to worry and even pry.

I sometimes long just to hear the words that I am special to you and that you love me. I sometimes long to hear you say "Mamma, lets just hang out today - just us". I wish I could see spend more time with them like we use to. Or just sit around and jaw-jerk. I miss those days...those times. But, I just need to let them know that I'm here, that I'll always be here.

I love them both as only a mother can.

Mamma, lets just hang out on Tuesday! We'll do lunch...do a little jaw-jerking... maybe see a movie or play a little. Just US! And, I'll even let you pry and prod ::smile::

Love, Bumma (aka SjP)

now i know how arnold feels

Posted by SjP in

The other day I decided to get my car washed and waxed. Before going home, I made a quick stop at the convenient store and got a little tickled with the 40-something man in the car next to me admiring the newly washed and waxed black on black muscle car. He was trying to be cool - but I knew he was looking.

As I walked into the store there was a 50-something man walking out who said the obligatory hello - cause that's what African-American men do when they see an African-American woman. Anyway, I get my stuff and go back to the car. I get real tickled as both the 40 and 50-something men are gawking at the car so much so that the 40-something man rolls his window down to say "nice car". The 50-something then gives me a "thumbs up". I simply laugh and put the key in the ignition.

Then it hits me! They were looking, gawking, fantasizing, and drooling at the mouth about the car! Not me! But the car. Damn! There was a time when they would have been looking at me with such wishful eyes. Upstaged by a car. All I can do is shake my head and yes even laugh out loud as I thought about this video I saw a few months ago.

old school friday...family reunion

Posted by SjP in ,

Oh Yeah! It's FRIDAY!!! And that means it's time for some old school jamming and par-taying in the blogosphere! This week's theme is "Family Reunion".

My family has never really had a full-scale family reunion. But whenever there is a family gathering of any sort its just like a reunion - and its all good. So, I've selected three cuts this week that each remind me of a member of my family or a family gathering....and its all good!

Dysfunctional as we may be - that's what make us Family. And wouldn't trade 'em for nothing. Too much support...too much encouragement...too much love...and way too many good "reunion" memories.

So, ya'll sit back, listen, and enjoy some tunes from wwwwaaaayyyy bbbbaaaacccckkkk in the day that remind me of my Family!

hoping breezes take me away in september

Posted by SjP in ,

Yesterday, I spent time with relatives as we celebrated the 81st birthday of my family’s matriarch. It was a wonderful day of feasting, reminiscing, and even the occasional embellishment of events gone by. A great time was had by all. Whenever we all get together, I always enjoy hearing my cousins’ recount of one of the “second honeymoon trips” they’ve enjoyed during their 40+ year marriage. And I’m always telling my Best Half – who likes to stay very close to home - that we have to “get away” one day before we’re too old to enjoy it and forget what we’re suppose to do.

The young-SjPs are old enough now and there is really nothing that keeps us from re-energizing the fire other than concern about the spending that kind of money in this economy. But, after checking out one of my many fantasy resort sites, I’m thinking that the bad economy is just another excuse we’ve both used over the years. So, I’m thinking that maybe we should just take the plunge and go! But where?

Since I’ve always wanted to go to the Bahamas, I checked out this site with the caption “Super Clubs and Breezes Knows What a Girl Wants”. Must admit that I was a tad hesitant, because it sounded like my name might need to be Stella and just didn’t think the Best Half would like that too much. Anyway, what I found at Breezes.com was a listing of their all inclusive beach resorts . As I sojourned around the site, I was relieved to see that there offerings were perfect for an old married couple like me and the Best Half.

In addition to a wonderful array of all inclusive vacation packages , including the Bahamas, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we fly to Nassau and enjoy each other for 3 nights for just under $1200. For all inclusive resort vacation , we’ll get all of our meals and snacks, unlimited drinks, premium liquor, wine and champagne, activities, entertainment, land and water sports. I know! Sounds too good to believe so I called them to make sure that I wasn’t misreading something or if that was a per person quote.

So, okay, here’s the catch. I’d have to book it before the end of the month and pay the deposit in order to get the $1200 deal for the two of us because they are running a sale. D*mn! Didn’t want to hear that! But! Get this! The representative told me – in his authentic Bahamian accent – that when the sale ends it would cost me about $250 more. You mean the Best Half and I could celebrate #22 (September) in Nassau for less than $1500.00! Well all I can say is that Super Clubs and Breezes Knows What a Girl Wants!

Now all I got to do is to convince my Best Half, whose gotten really boring in his old age, that it’s time to go to Funky Nassau!

i ain't saying she shoulda done it...but, i understand

Posted by SjP in ,

Move over! Stop touching me! I was listening to that! That's my shirt and I didn't tell you that you could wear it! That's mine! Shut up! You shut up!

I ain't saying she should have done it - but I understand cause sometimes your kids just get on that very last nerve and the only thing you feel you can do without killing them is to put them out. So, I can't pass judgement on
Madlyn Primoff who put her bickering children out of the car. I can't even pass judgement on her driving off and not coming back to get them right away. Like I said, I ain't saying she should have done it - but I understand.

When your "bundles of joy" turn into hormone-filled, smelling themselves, flip mouth, you're so stupid, entitlement-feeling, back-talking, know it all, getting on your last good nerve, thinking their grown "demon seeds" - then sometimes you just feel like there is nothing else you can do but to "go there".

But don't get me wrong. The young-SjP's have never done ANYTHING to make me do something like take them to the police station because the stole something or put them out of the house to keep from slapping the taste out of their mouths or pick up the phone to call 'po-po' to come get you before you beat them down to the 'white meat' or contemplate adding them to my decor as a wall hanging. I mean, the young-SjP's ALWAYS do exactly what they are told when they are told. They NEVER talk back or think the know EVERYTHING. They don't have the SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT that so many young folk their age have. They NEVER have their hands out. They are simply perfect and NEVER EVER get on my one good last nerve.

Yeah! Right! Like I said...I ain't saying you should have done it. But, I do understand.

Much obliged to Villager who maintains a list and ranking of all of the Black Blogs in the blogosphere. Because you see, there are not just a couple or even a few hundred Black Blogs - there are 1, 629 Black Blogs. And each and every one of them are listed in Villager's Black Blog Rank List.

In the #1 spot of Black Blogs is Pam's House Blend . Numbers 2 thru 10 are: Bossip.com, Nah Right, Concrete Loop, Oliver Willis, Young, Black & Fabulous, Sandra Rose, Crunk & Disorderly , Jack and Jill Politics, and The Angry Black Woman. sunday inspirations...take the wheel

Posted by SjP in ,

First and foremost, Happy Easter to you all. May the Lord bless and keep you this day as we honor, revere, and worship the Risen King!

Saturday I was able to get the two young-SjPs to engage in some real house-cleaning almost to my liking. Why they don't see the same dust I do is beyond me - but after a couple of finger-tests they got it right.

Anyway, you can't clean without music and the oldest young SjP had the box blaring. A great mixture of songs that even I enjoyed. A little Jennifer, Beyonce', and even a little of some groups I couldn't even begin to name. Then came the 'country'! Oh Lawd have mercy! Not Country!

I have to admit that I liked the song very much. I'd heard it before - but it took on a whole new meaning for me as I continue my challenge of "keeping a guard over my mouth". So, on this Easter Sunday Inspirations, I'm simply asking the Savior to "Take the Wheel".

Sunday Inspirations, is the meme created in honor of my Mother for Mother's Day 2008 and is just one way to help get us through the week ahead, the trials we may face, and yes, to say Thank Ya and testify! my how time flies!

Posted by SjP in ,

My how time flies! I can hardly believe that it's been a year since Sojourner's Place was bestowed the highest blogging honor - in my opinion - in the entire blogosphere. Being admitted into the AfroSpear one year ago today was and remains truly an honor.
I must give a "much obliged" to the Villager who reminded me of this day on my FaceBook page. I remember going over to Electronic Village a year ago for my daily dose and seeing his post welcoming into the Spear. My heart jumped for joy as I ran and told My Best Half that I had been admitted.

Being a member of the
AfroSpear remains a great honor. It has allowed me an opportunity to use my blog voice in a collective advocacy in such a manner that makes an important impact on our lives. It provides me with an opportunity to stay informed or what is happening in the world in which I live.

Much obliged to the AfroSpear for considering the voice of SjP worthy of such a powerful voice in the blogosphere.

sunday inspirations...freeing my mind

Posted by SjP in ,

God is not through with me, yet. Yes, we're still talking - and I must admit that I'm doing a whole lot more listening and a lot less arguing. It's amazing just how quickly the fog clears when you let go and let God. So, needless to say, I'm feeling better - and its not as hard to keep my mouth shut as I thought - especially when you have the Gatekeeper Psalm as a screensaver (lol).

In addition to working on the mouth, we're dealing with the mind. Ya'll know that devil tries to get you any way he can; and if he can control your mind and your thoughts then he will be successful in controling your life. So, my lesson for this week is, as taught by Bishop T.D. Jakes is to Free My Mind.

Psalm 118: 17-29

I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD: This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar. Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

sunday inspirations...praying for the gatekeeper at my lips

Posted by SjP in ,

Yesterday, I wrote about the trials I've been going through at work. In the post, I pointed a finger toward others rather than acknowledging the fingers pointing back at myself. But, much obliged to my virtual spiritual advisor, Revy Rev, who would not allow wallow in the self-pity. He, along with StraightTalk, made me confess to myself that "It Ain't About Me".

A hard confession? Yes. A necessary confession? Absolutely! So, it should come as no surprise that me and God have been having a real heart to heart conversation these past 24 hours. And He has surely reading me and telling me about myself. Ain't nothing I can say to defend myself because He knows all and besides my arms are just way too short to box with Him.

Needless to say, that I am currently in a state of self-reproval. Looking inward instead of outward. Acknowledging my short-comings, my deficiencies, and yes even my pride. I know that when I allow me to take over and not Him that no good can come. That I can not do His Will or the work that He has planned for me.

So, I going to keep praying asking God to be the Gatekeeper at my Lips and Order My Steps because I know that the Battle is Not Mine, It's the Lords.

Psalm 141
A psalm of David. LORD, I call to you; come quickly to help me; listen to my plea when I call. Let my prayer be incense before you; my uplifted hands an evening sacrifice. Set a guard, LORD, before my mouth, a gatekeeper at my lips. Do not let my heart incline to evil, or yield to any sin. I will never feast upon the fine food of evildoers. Let the just strike me; that is kindness; let them rebuke me; that is oil for my head. All this I shall not refuse, but will pray despite these trials. When their leaders are cast over the cliff, all will learn that my prayers were heard. As when a farmer plows a field into broken clods, so their bones will be strewn at the mouth of Sheol. My eyes are upon you, O GOD, my Lord; in you I take refuge; do not strip me of life. Guard me from the trap they have set for me, from the snares of evildoers. Into their own nets let all the wicked fall, while I make good my own escape.

it ain't gotta make sense...i just gotta make sure i get paid

Posted by SjP in ,

Yesterday was Old School Friday and the theme was “Hard Day at Work”. Little did I know just how prophetic my DMX pick would be for the day on my side of the plantation. But, I’m going to admit that I was completely to blame for the type of day I had. Hell! I’m completely to blame for the last years.

I haven’t learned in my 56 years of life and 35 years of employment when to keep my mouth shut. I haven’t learned that having a college education along with a pretty impressive professional title does not entitle me to have an opinion. I haven’t learned to stay in my place and to never question those to whom I report or to definitely NOT disagree. I haven’t learned to “Just Be Glad that I Have a Job” rule. I haven’t learned that no matter what I say or do that I will always be discounted and characterized as “the angry Black woman” in the room.

So, I’m going to do all in my power to do everything I can to simply keep my mouth shut. I will stand by silently as those in authority lie. I will wholeheartedly nod my head in agreement as those who voice differing opinions, question, or don’t cow-tow to the powers are systematically targeted for unemployment. I will sit idly by as covert harassment and intimidation are enforced to cover the butts of those in charge. I will stop calling it like I see it when obvious manipulations and maneuverings are occurring. I will do all in my power to know and stay in my place.

As a colleague told me recently “It ain’t gotta make sense. I just gotta make sure I get my check”. But, my Mother always says “Right is Right and Right Don’t Wrong Nobody”. So, if my Mother is right and my colleague is also right – what do I do and still be able to live with myself?

sunday inspirations...giving thanks

Posted by SjP in ,

SjP is giving God MUCH praise and honor this morning. With the economy in the pits and more and more people losing their jobs, I am so thankful that two of my family members have just had employment breaks. My cousin begins training tomorrow for a job he's been trying to get for over a year and my brother was just moved to interim director were he works. As the saying goes, "God is Good All the Time. And All the Time God is Good"!

This morning, I am giving thanks to God for always making a way out of no way. So, it is more than fitting that today's Sunday Inspiration presents 11 Scriptural Principals of Giving Thanks to God because doing so honors Him.

1. Giving thanks Honors Him. Why is it so important that we express gratitude to God? Because He deserves the glory. When we bring hearts of thanksgiving to the Lord, we glorify and magnify His name.We act in obedience by giving the credit and praise to the One who should receive it. He is the author of every good thing, and should receive every honor

2. Giving thanks to God refocuses our attention. Expressing gratitude to the Lord sets our sights on Him.What better way to bring our attention back to God than to think of the many blessings He has given us.What happens when we rise in the morning? We hurry and focus on the world. We should begin each day by setting our minds on eternal things, and realizing the many awesome things about Him prepares us for the day.

3. Giving thanks to God releases us from anxiety. We live in an age of anxiety and worry. In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul urges us not to give in to worry. Instead, we should bring God our requests with thanksgiving. Then, the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds. Giving thanks to God is the best way to be at peace in a time that has so much fear
and anxiety.

4. Giving thanks to God refreshes our relationship with Him. Bringing our gratitude to the Lord has a wonderful effect on our personal relationship with Him. As we declare His loving kindness in the morning and His faithfulness at night, our spirits are rejuvenated. We feel closer and closer to Him, because He draws near to us when we thank Him and praise Him.
You can’t reflect on His blessings and continue to feel downhearted.

5. Giving thanks to God reinforces our faith. The Israelites remembered the mighty works of God.They recalled how He crushed the Egyptians at the Red Sea, and how He fed them on manna in the wilderness. When they kept these memories alive, their faith grew stronger. When you remember the things God has done for you, your faith is reinforced.

6. Giving thanks to God causes our spirit to rejoice. What else happens through thanking God? We get more joy out of life. Counting blessings can only make your heart soar. Do you sing when you’re alone? It doesn’t matter how your voice sounds, but only how your heart feels. Give Him thanks and praise by singing songs that express gratitude and worship.

7. We give thanks by expressing it in words. Giving thanks to God is one of the greatest possible ways we could use our time.Thank Him in words, even if all you can think of at first to say is,“Thank you, God.” Then begin saying thank you for every single blessing and fact about God that you can recall.

8. We give thanks by singing. Another way to thank God is by singing. There is music all around us, from the birds and from the streams that make their own melodies. There is power in song, and God made that power so that we could use it to bring Him our thanks and our praise. There are so many kinds of music today, and we can use them to sing with hearts of joy about the wonderful things God has done for us.

9. We give thanks by living obediently. We can however, express our gratitude without ever saying or singing a word. Nothing pleases God more than an obedient life, because that says,“Lord, you have done so much for me, now I will live for You.” Sincere gratitude will come from an obedient heart, and will lead to obedient actions. We can devote our entire lives to thanksgiving by serving Him and following His will every day.

10. We give thanks through public worship. One of the reasons we gather for worship is to express our thanks to God. Most people attend church to receive something, whether it is teaching, fellowship, or just enjoying the choir. God’s primary purpose for fellowship, however, is that we might worship and express adoration and thanksgiving. As we hear the gospel, God is giving us something; when we sing, we are giving something back.

11. We give thanks by giving generously. Finally, we offer our thanksgiving by giving our resources back to God.We owe every breath and everything we own to our Lord and Creator. When we understand this, we give naturally from hearts filled with joy and thanksgiving. He would not spare His only Son, so how can we be anything but generous in returning our gifts to Him?

I hope that you participate and share with us your Sunday Inspirations. Your weekly contribution may very well be the inspiration that someone else may need and has been looking for.

sunday inspirations...please carry us in your arms

Posted by SjP in , ,

I have recently learned of the "home-going" of a Soror, a child of college friends, a spouse of a former colleague. Although my heart, and certainly the hearts of everyone who knew these fine and wonderful individuals, are heavy - I've learned not to question God's Will. I know that both life and death are part of His Plan. A plan that is perfect, as God does not make any mistakes. In acknowledgement of His Perfect Wisdom, I can only pray that He continues to carry us all through times such as these.

To my Sorors, my Friends, and my Colleague, let us all remember that God never puts more on us than we can handle. Let us all remember that the footprints we see behind us are those of our Lord carrying us during this time of our bereavement.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints. Other times there were one set of footprints. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat,I could see only one set of footprints,so I said to the Lord,"You promised me, Lord, that if I followed You, You would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, When I have needed You most, You have not been there for me?" The Lord replied, "The times when you have seen only one set of footprints is when I carried you." by Mary Stevenson(11/8/1922 -- 1/6/1999)

happy new year...much obliged and paying forward!

Posted by SjP in , , ,

It is hard to believe that one year ago today, January 1, 2008, the doors of Sojourner's Place opened officially with a post entitled, Being Black in the Workplace. It was hard going there for a while, as I had no idea back then for what I was doing. But, something wonderful has happened and not SjP's has become an integral part of my life!

Today, 378 posts later, Sojourner's Place a rank of #65 on Villager's Black Blog Rankings for December 2008 out of 1516 blogs; a 1001 Technorati blog reactions and a rank somewhere between 119 - 130 (provided Technorati's system is working correctly); a recipient of 20 awards, recognitions, and honors. I am very proud to have been nominated for and received 2009 Black Web Best Commenter Award, it really does pale next to the first awards received. The first from Ms. Marva of The Marvalus View, the Rose Award and the second, from Yobachie of BlackPerspective.Net, the E for Excellent Award. And, I will be forever humbled with two of my posts being recognized and found worthy of two awards. The first, Saggin' Pants, was presented the Rising Blogger Award from Mimi Lenox of Mimi Writes. My favorite post and most personally profound, Crossing To A Destination Yet Unknown, was recently recognized as one of the best posts of 2008 by The Best Post of the Week blog.

So when a milestone is reached in the life of Sojourner's Place, The Emblem of the Helping Hand is passed along as my way of saying Much Obliged, Very Much Obliged to those who made it possible for ole SjP to keep on going. Therefore, I am passing on the first Emblems of 2009 and the 4th round of recipients from Sojourner's Place to the following spots because y'all give me the strength and encouragement to carry on and keep on telling the truth according to SjP!

The rules for displaying and passing on the emblem on, are found at the official Emblem of the Helping Hand blog. I encourage all Sojourners to visit the recent recipients of the Emblem and give them a congrats and a much obliged for all they do.

Congratulations to all new, past, and future recipients of the Emblem. Remember to pay it forward. And as always, Much Obliged...Very Much Obliged!
