networks to potus: you costin' us money

Posted by SjP in ,

The broadcast networks are getting a little testy with the POTUS taking up all of their prime-time spots for press and news conferences. According to one of the executive broadcasters, speaking on the condition of anonymity to the Washington Post, their network executives have expressed concern to the White House about the frequency of prime-time news conferences and the financial sacrifice being made to carry the event.

Yes! That's right! The networks are getting tired of the POTUS always being on the television cause its making them lose money. After all, you can't have a "word from our sponsors" when the President is speaking to the Nation. Perhaps they should take a cue from the Fox Broadcasting Network - not the Fox News Channel, because they have said "to hell with that" and told the White House nope we ain't gonna show Obama's 100 day press conference; we gonna show "Lie to Me" instead. HMMMM! Now, isn't that interesting? But, anyway, the unnamed Washington Post exec said the networks are hoping that the President will "be more flexible in working with networks to find the best times to schedule the events".

Is it me? Am I just too sensitive? But, somebody has got to tell me why the President of the United States needs to schedule press and news conferences to accommodate network TV? I mean it ain't like he's trying to have a press conference during the NBA Finals of the Super Bowl. This is of course the President of the United States. And since January 21 all we have heard coming out of the mouths of all of the talking heads is "first 100 days".

Well today is the 100th day of the Obama administration. I for one am looking forward to him defining and defending this period rather than the pundits. After tonight they won't be offering up their critiques of the Obama Administration's first 100 days. They'll be pontificating, analyzing, and jaw-jerking about tonight's press conference.

Once again, proof positive is offered that That One is smarter than most of us - and definitely smarter than the pundits. I'm just wondering when they will realize that.

i ain't saying she a gold digger

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed a wife with which to share his fortune.

One evening at an investment meeting he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.

I may look like just an ordinary man', he said to her, ' but in just a few years, my father will die, and I’ll inherit $65 million!' impressed, the woman obtained his business card, and three days later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at financial planning than men.

psa: wake forest university offering full rides for graduate school

Posted by SjP in ,

In business, you have to act when the opportunity is presented, and that is now.” Derrick S. Boone, Ph.D.

As you may recall, during President Obama’s address to Congress Tuesday night, he asked every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training.

This can be community college or a four-year school; vocational training or an apprenticeship. But whatever the training may be, every American will need to get more than a high school diploma. And dropping out of high school is no longer an option.

Easier said than done, right? Because even if you are willing to “take on the challenge” you got to be concerned about just how you would pay for this one or more years of higher education.

Well, for those of you who have thought about pursuing a graduate degree in Business, Wake Forest University might just be your answer. I learned the other day from a colleague that Wake Forest has a tremendous opportunity available that is “free for the taking”.

Here is an excerpt of the email I received regarding this opportunity:

I wanted to let you know about a great opportunity here at Wake Forest where you can get a FREE education and get PAID while you're doing it. Our Dean of the Schools of Business is the former CEO of PepsiCo and very committed to diversity. He's gone around to his CEO friends, who have agreed to donate a bunch of money to pay tuition and fees, provide a stipend, and a job, to diverse students.

It would be a tragedy if this money would have to be returned because of the lack of applications. Oh, I forgot to tell you that it comes with tuition and a 21K stipend.

If you are interested or know someone who might be interested in this opportunity to earn a Masters in Business Management, please contact:

Derrick S. Boone, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Marketing
Room 3139 Worrell Professional Center
Babcock Graduate School of Management
Wake Forest University
1834 Wake Forest Drive
Winston-Salem, NC 27109-8758
derrick.boone@mba.wfu.edu

Here are the details of the program:

The Master of Art in Management program is designed specifically for liberal arts majors only. The MA degree program is a 10 month intense study of the basic functional areas of business. After graduation and working for approximately two years, all MA graduates are eligible to apply to Wake Forest as part of the MA/MBA joint degree program and get the MBA in one year. The new Dean, Steve Reinemund, has created a new scholarship for diverse students pursuing the MA degree called the Corporate Fellowship.

The Corporate Fellowship provides full tuition and a $21,000 stipend to cover living expenses. Additionally, each Corporate Fellow will participate in a practicum. The practicum has two components, educational and professional development. Each student will be assigned a mentor that is a high level executive with their sponsor corporation. The mentor will oversee an educational project covering 4 of the functional areas of business using their own corporation as the subject. The student will visit the corporation 3 - 4 times during the program to present his/her results of their research project. Additionally, the "professional development" component of the fellowship provides career coaching and leadership development for the students. The goal for the corporation is to be able to groom and hopefully, hire a top candidate from a diverse background for their organization. Of course, there is no obligation that the students accept any offer of employment. Still, the student benefits, even if they are not ultimately hired by their sponsor corporation in that they have the MA degree and the type of experience that will make them more marketable.

will the tribe speak when they find out the real truth?

Posted by SjP in ,

I like the CBS reality series SURVIVOR. I am always intrigued by the mind-games, manipulations, and even blindsiding that goes on to win a million dollars. This is not a game for the weak or weak-minded, because as Chris Rock use to say "Good Lord! That's a lot of money!" and we see each week that people will do anything for money. Hell being marooned in some obscure place for 39 days with some complete strangers is proof of that fact. But, that's another post for another time.

In tonight's episode, Taj made a relatively innocent statement about her husband which sparked several questions about what he did, his name, and so on and so on. She tried to be cool - but the questions kept on coming until finally she had to admit to the inquiring minds that she was married to football great, Eddie George. Now, at this point I'm cracking up because the members of her tribe are pretty awestruck with the fact that they are on Survivor with someone related to a celebrity. But, what they don't realize - at least not yet - is that Taj is a celebrity in her own right without

For those of you who don't know or don't remember, Taj's claim to fame is being a member of the Grammy®-nominated group SWV (Sisters With Voices). The author of “Player HateHER: How To Avoid The Beat Down And Live In A Drama Free World," she warns her SURVIVOR opponents that she is "not the average NFL wife and mother." She has overcome both physical and mental abuse in her life it is no wonder she says she's "naturally distrustful." Use to beating the odds, Taj says that she is "literally, truly a survivor, who has survived more things you can ever imagine."

Since her tribe now knows that she is Mrs. Eddie George, the rumblings began that she didn't need the million dollar prize. Well, that may be true - but, I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that when they find out that she's an SWV surviving SURVIVOR will definitely be a very hard row to hoe.

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out during this season. I mean it might be just too much for some of members of the SURVIVOR cast to come to grips with the fact that there are African-American women who are successful in their own right married to African-American men who are also successful. Go figure...

The Dow went up more than 900 points today! This is the biggest gain in the market since 1933. Frankly, while that is a very interesting piece of trivia - I am literally over here thanking my God for doing what HE do and still being in control. You can read the full story from CNN here.

Now, I know that the storm may not be over. But, I also know that HE has given the world an chance to do the right thing. Let's pray that HIS voice has been heard. But, in the meantime - and in between time - I'm giving HIM all the praise for saying "Peace, Be Still"!

we deserve it dividend

Posted by SjP in

"A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic" offers the following bailout plan to save our economy. Sounds like a great plan to me...

I'm against the $85,000,000, 000.00 bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000, 000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.

To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+. Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00. My plan is to give $425,0 00 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend. Of course, it would NOT be tax-free.

So let's assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000, 000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket.

A husband and wife has $595,000 .00. What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved. Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads. Put away money for college - it'll be there. Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs. Buy a new car - create jobs. Invest in the market - capital drives growth. Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves. Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else.

Remember this is for every adult. U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( 'vote buy' ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President. If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!

As for AIG - liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't. Sure it's a crazy idea that can 'never work.'But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion. We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC. And remember, The Family plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Kindest personal regards,
A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic.

Now that's an incentive package I could certainly use! Right on "A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic"! I hear the Treasury Secretary's job may be open soon.

a chicken for every pot and a car for every garage

Posted by SjP in ,

You might remember from your history or civics classes, that the 1928 Presidential Republican Nominee, Herbert Hoover's campaign slogan was "A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage". Well, it seems that Republican Nominee Lt. Dan has taken this to heart and is the very embodiment of the prosperity Hoover proclaimed that everyone would enjoy if elected.

You see, in addition to the Lt. Dan's chickens for their pots they also have 13 cars for the 7 garages attached to (or detached from) his 7 homes.

Here's the Lt. Dan Fleet list:

  1. 2004 Cadillac
  2. 2005 Volkswagen convertible

  3. 2001 Honda sedan
  4. Toyota Prius (for his daughter)

  5. Ford pick-up

  6. 1960 classic Jeep
  7. 2001 GMC SUV

  8. 2000 Lincoln

  9. 2008 Jeep Wrangler

  10. golf-cart-like GEM

  11. golf-cart-like GEM

  12. golf-cart-like GEM (not a typo, he owns 3)

  13. Lexus (Cindy's with a MS BUD vanity plate)

Oh yeah, the Obama's got a car in their garage, too! It's a Ford Escape Hybrid (2009s start at 29K). Now, ya'll stop hating on Lt. Dan. You got to remember that he spent 5 years as a POW where he didn't have a chicken, a pot, a car, or a garage...

Source

**Hoover won the 1928 election and in 1929 the Great Depression began on Black Tuesday (Wall Street Crash) . In 1932, he was defeated by Democrat FDR who served an unprecedented 4 terms as POTUS. Now isn't that interesting...

lt. dan, the plane, the plane!

Posted by SjP in , ,

O.K. Lt. Dan, first you said:

You know, there's been tremendous turmoil in our financial markets and Wall Street. And it is, people are frightened by these events. Our economy, I think, still, the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times.

Then you said:

My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong. No one can match an American worker. Our workers sell more goods to more markets than any other on earth. Our workers have always been the strength of our economy, and they remain the strength of our economy today.

Lt. Dan, much obliged for the clarification. I was beginning to get concerned with all the financial institutions going to hell in a handbasket as fast you can say "lipstick on a pig". So, I guess all those American workers who watched their jobs shipped overseas and the millions of Americans who have to decide whether to buy the medicine they need to stay alive or the food they need to stay alive and the millions of Americans who have lost their homes because of predatory lending practices really don't have anything to worry about because THEY - WE - REMAIN THE STRENGTH OF THE ECONOMY TODAY. But, I still got one question for you, Lt. Dan - did your wife's private jet take you, your $500 shoes, and your 7 mortgages on a campaign stop to Fantasy Island? THE PLANE...THE PLANE!

sex, drugs, gifts, and $4 a gallon gas

Posted by SjP in

CNN is reporting that employees of the US Department of Interior have been receiving "improper gifts from energy industry representatives. And in some cases, these folks have doing a little coke, smoking a little dope and having sex. But, have no fear it didn't cost you and me one thin dime...unless of course the "good time had by all" was happening on the J-O-B or the $5.3 million it took to investigate all of the partying that's been going on since 2002!
The investigation was prompted in 2006 by an internal whistle-blower who reported concerns about the department responsible for selling the oil and gas the government collects as rent from companies drilling on federal lands. Seems that Shell and Chevron ain't talking right now saying they need time to review the allegations.

So here's the case in brief resulting from the $5.3 million investigation:

~ recreational marijuana and cocaine use" by "a handful" of Interior Department staff

~ two federal employees "engaged in brief sexual relationships with representatives doing business" with the department

~ two employees "received combined gifts and gratuities on at least 135 occasions from four major oil and gas companies

~ some of the government employees tried to hide their close association with the industry they were supposed to be regulating

~ e-mails from MMS (Minerals Management Services) employees "preparing to attend industry events used such language as 'this trip is to be kept quiet,' or were asked to RSVP 'in private' by their supervisor"

~ alleged inappropriate behavior by 19 members (about 1/3 of the department) of the Royalty in Kind program -- about one-third of the department

All I got to say is that its bad enough having to pay $4 a gallon for gas just to get to work and $3 for a damn loaf of bread - but, now I got to pay a $5.3 million investigation bill because these folks wanted to get a blow - or get blowed - on my dime! Well, as Obama said: ENOUGH!!!! And if you put lipstick on a pig - ITS STILL A M-FING PIG!

say what? i didn't hear that...

Posted by SjP in ,

I woke-up this morning to the sad news about Tony Snow (RIP). As a reporter, he was good. As a White House Press Secretary, he was probably the best. His passing has dominated US airwaves today and I am really saddened by this news.
Seemed as if there was nothing else of import going on in the US or world today until I began to surf some of my usual international spots.

So, I offer you: Say What? I didn't hear that...

Iran tried to deceive world by 'testing' old missiles, US experts believe: According to this Telegraph.co.uk article by By Philip Sherwell (New York) and Carolynne Wheeler (Jerusalem), U.S. intelligence officials and independent analysts believe that Iran's missile testing last week was actually an attempt to deceive the world. Iran's claims of testing a new version of the Shahab missile with a 1,250-mile range are under severe scrutiny as all evidence suggests that the "test" actually involved a lone 10-year-old missile. The article alleges that there is evidence of doctored up photos, videos, and misleading statements from the Iranians. But, have no fear, the Pentagon is on it viewing the tests "as an attempt further to destabilise the region". Pentagon spokesperson, Geoff Morrell goes on to say:

We don't believe this exercise to have been an illusion. They were not testing new technologies or capabilities, but rather firing off old equipment in an attempt to intimidate their neighbours and escalate tension in the region.

Can you say "Wag the Dog"?

President George Bush: 'Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter': Robert Winnett (Deputy Political Editor) and Urmee Khan, also of Telegraph.co.uk, report that that GWB ended a private G8 meeting with the words: "Goodbye from the world's biggest polluter." Seems that this GWB blooper surprised at least one attendee who stated:

Everyone was very surprised that he was making a joke about America's record on pollution.
Can you say "Jesse, pass GWB the nuts"?

World's largest mortgage providers teeter on the brink of collapse: In this The Independent on Sunday article, writers Guy Adams (Los Angeles) and Margareta Pagano (Business Editor) reported that all 33 branches of the Indymac Bank in California closed early this past Friday keeping hundreds of "jittery investors" from withdrawing their money before the Pasadena-based bank went under. Government officials closed down Indymac late on Friday, citing a massive run on deposits by worried customers. All 33 branches of the Pasadena-based bank closed three hours early, locking out hundreds of jittery investors hoping to withdraw their savings before it went under. As the reporters so aptly remind us:
Indymac, known ironically as a "thrift" bank, becomes the second-largest savings firm in US history to go under, after the Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Company, which collapsed in 1984.
Can you say Bear Stearns, Neal Bush, Savings & Loan, Desert Storm"?

Warrant for Sudan's president over Dafur war crimes: The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the International Criminal Court in the Hague will seek the arrest of Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes in Darfur. According to the US State Department, the prosecutor intended to go before the Court and request a warrant of Bashir's arrest. Sudan, of course, is pretty ticked off with this news and says:

it [the arrest and trial of Bashir] would destroy the peace process.

Can you say "Let the Games Begin!"?

mccain's $1 million gas deal

Posted by SjP in ,

I don't have to tell you that the price of gas just keeps on going up. The rising price of oil impacts every aspect of our lives. It is a vicious, vicious cycle that results in ridiculous prices of food, clothing, and basic necessities. We're all feeling it and there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel.

Several weeks ago, Senator McCain proposed the elimination of the gas tax for the summer. Giving us a break of about $.18 cents a gallon or $30 a year. Now, he's talking about off-shore drilling. Why?

Well the
Center for Responsive Politics reports that McCain has accepted over $1 million from the oil and gas industries. It appears that several of his top advisers have lobbied for big oil. Its no wonder why his energy and environmental plans or non-plans are always in the best interest of the Shells, Exxons, and Mobiles.

The
Center for American Progress Action Fund further reports that McCain has received millions in donations from these very same companies that has continued to support the Bush administration.

This video from
theRealMcCain.com provides proof of McCain's connection to big oil. Please watch and share!

why come?

Posted by SjP in , ,

I'm just trying to figure out some things and maybe ya'll can help me. So here are some SjP "Why Come?" questions for you:

Gas prices: The oil companies say that Americans need to stop using so much gas because we ain't got much left. They, and Missus Clinton, say its the private investors' fault for these high gas prices. So, if that's all true, Why come them folks at Exxon, Mobil, Shell make $40 billion in profits e'ery year and gas keep going up? Why come they got to make so much money?

Popular Vote Count: I heard somewhere that that young man, Obama won more states than Missus Clinton. Now, I know that some of them states was what they call caucus states and that they supposedly didn't really vote. Can't rightly say that I understand all that - but if that young man got more folks in more states to say they want him to be President of these United States of America than Missus Clinton did, Why come she keep saying she more people voted for her? Why come she don't she want to count them folks in them states that caucused?

Puerto Rico: Now, they tell me that them folks down there in Puerto Rico and that place they call Guam, been able to have a say in who gonna be the one the Democrats pick to run for President. But, they say they can't vote in November. If they can't vote in November, Why come they can vote now? And Why come how they vote so important?

Something else on them U.S. Territories: I been watching that CNN today, and they say that them more young mens and womens who live in them places like Puerto Rico and Guam, been going over to Iraq than them young mens and womens from the other states by comparison. I don't know if that true, but if it is and they U.S citizens, then Why come they can't vote for who gone send them send them over there to fight? Don't seem fair or right to me.

Women and the Vote: I done seen and read a whole lot about how so many womens want Missus Clinton to be the next President. I sho' did see a lot of womens yesterday supporting her while I was watching that meeting on TV. They got real mad and started yelling and screaming when that committee said what they was going to do with them two states that broke the rules. Seems like they been saying that Missus Clinton ain't been treated right cause she a woman and that women are mad at how they ain't been treating her right. Why come they keep saying that she been treated bad cause she a woman? Why come they keep saying that women are and gonna be mad cause she ain't gone win? I just don't understand all this. Wish somebody would ask me; ain't nobody asked me nothing! Why come they don't want to know what I think, AIN'T I A WOMAN?

Holla Back!

team clinton feeling the recession, too?

Posted by SjP in , ,

I need some real help trying to understand this one. O.K., so Hillary is going around everywhere talking about the need for affordable health care for ALL Americans...ain't got no problem with that! In fact, I heard her talking with a man who had recently lost a loved one because of the lack of health care. It was a heart-wrenching story and of course, the Senator was both teary and somber...got a problem with that!

Here's why! Apart from this news bite appearing to be a hypocritical photo-op, I was blinded by the recent reports permeating the media that Clinton has not paid the health insurance premiums for her team for the last two months! According to one article: During the first two months of the year, the campaign did not pay down any of that debt. In fact, it accrued another $16,000 in unpaid bills last month, and it finished the month owing Aetna $229,000.

Now, I heard somewhere (tic) that the Clintons made over 100 million dollars since 2000. And I also heard the Senator say that she "has nothing against rich people" - guess not since she is one. But, here's my issue/question: if she could afford to loan her campaign 5 mil a couple of months ago CAN'T she afford to pay the 229K in health insurance benefits for her staff - not to mention the other 16K owed to vendors. Seems to me that she's got her priorities mixed. Guess she's feeling the recession, too.

All this - and more - make me wonder just what she meant by "he [Obama] can't win!". Did she really mean that Obama can't beat McCain and she can or how dare Obama take away her birth-right? You know what I think...what about you?

Obliged to you for hearing me, and now old Sojourner('s Place) ain't got nothing more to say.

Y'all Should Be Happy!!

Posted by SjP in , ,

Did you know that your salary is nearly as much on average as your white counterparts! Girl, you are really doing it! According to this week's report of earnings - we only make $100 less than white women. That ain't bad!!! Now of course, our brothers did not do as well this quarter as they make about $200 less than their counterparts.

The statistics are amazing if not dreadful! Its hard to believe that a white man makes damn near as much money on average as a Black couple. According to the report, White men earn about $800 per week. Black men earn about $600 and Black women earn just over $500 weekly. Now that adds up to $1100 a week, just $300 less than what a white male earns by himself. And if that white man is married to a white woman - well they're bringing home - on average 1400 *#*#* dollars per week! Somethings wrong with that picture!

Now think about it. How much do the white counterparts with whom you work make? If you're world is like mine - you probably bring home a nice chunk of change - but your counterpart is probably bringing home a nice bundle of dollars! And I bet she's either younger, less experienced, and less educated than you are!

Anyway - here's an excerpt from the article regarding the report. The link to the article is below as well as the link to the full governmental report.
