Sojourner's Place
in honor of the man named king
Posted by SjP in american tragedy, celebrating life, sojourner's salute
On April 4, 1968, the man we called King, was taken from our midst. For many, he was a Dreamer, for other a Drum Major, still other saw him as a savior of sorts. His message was one of freedom and equality. His calling was to do God's Will. Yet, a sniper's bullet silenced silenced this gentle soul in a attempt to silence his voice, his dream, his calling. What a futile and senseless attempt. For a dream, albeit deferred, does not always shrivel or dry up...sometimes it festers and runs...and sometimes it explodes.
In Honor Of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

saluting one who did more than hope: dr. john hope franklin
Posted by SjP in 'bout sjp 'nem, celebrating life
John Hope Franklin lived for nearly a century and helped define that century. A towering historian, he led the recognition that African-American history and American history are one.The halls of ivy are dark this evening as we learn of the death of the and revered scholar, Dr. John Hope Franklin. Dr. Franklin, who passed away at the age of 94, was the first African-American to serve as a department chair at Duke University. An advisor to presidents, Dr. Franklin's research was a major contributing factor to the 1952 Brown vs the Board of Education which opened up public education to African-Americans. Yet, for so many of us, it is not this landmark decision for which he will be forever remembered with much gratitude and appreciation. Says Duke President Richard H. Brodhead in a written statement:
Yes, Dr. John Hope Franklin is the primary reason we are now able to study and research the contributions of African-American in an academic setting. This noted historian, scholar, Presidential Medal of Honor recipient, and Harvard graduate once said:My challenge," Franklin says, "was to weave into the fabric of American history enough of the presence of blacks so that the story of the United States could be told adequately and fairly.
The author of From Slavery to Freedom: A History of African Americans, Dr. Franklin touched the lives of so many with his teachings, his writings, and his dedication and commitment to "leave the pile higher than he found it". In a written statement today, President Obama, whom Dr. Franklin endorsed, said of his passing:Because of the life John Hope Franklin lived, the public service he rendered, and the scholarship that was the mark of his distinguished career, we all have a richer understanding of who we are as Americans and our journey as a people. Dr. Franklin will be deeply missed, but his legacy is one that will surely endure.
Dr. Franklin, a Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree, was a member of numerous educational and civic organizations in addition to being the recipient of several awards, honors, and recognitions including, but not limited to:
American Historical Association, American Studies Association, Southern Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Fisk University Board of Trustees, Chicago Public Library, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, Phi Beta Kappa, National Council on the Humanities, President's Advisory Commission on Ambassadorial Appointments, One America: The President's Initiative on Race and Alpha Phi Alpha

The Address (Parts 1 & 2)

** On a personal note, the young-SjP's High School Marching Band did real good as they passed by the President and First Lady during the parade. Of course I'm a little biased. LOL. But, I really lost it all over again when the Tuskegee Airmen and the "Rosa Parks" bus went pass...

Just wanted to take a few minutes between turkey basting and collard green tasting to share with you this little Christmas ditty with you. This is a season staple for the local radio station in "my side of the plantation". I hope you get a little chuckle out of it. I'd say Big Tyme is certainly "grippin" BIG TIME!

Paul Newman, 83, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008. I remember going to the movies with my parents to see his movies. Obviously, too young to know exactly what was really going on, I knew that there was something very special about the man on the screen with those steel blue eyes.
In remembering a consummate and humanitarian, this Thursday Thirteen post is dedicated to Paul Newman and the top 13+1 movies in which he starred.

update: stephanie tubbs jones...our prayers are with you!
Posted by SjP in celebrating life, sojourning voices
UPDATE: Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, according to medical officials, died today after suffering an aneurysm.
U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering an aneurysm. The news conference indicates that she is in critical condition, although CNN had earlier reported that the Congresswoman had passed away. I urge all Sojourners to keep Congresswoman Jones in our thoughts and prayers.
First elected in 1998, Tubbs Jones was one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's biggest boosters during the primaries. She backed Barack Obama in June and is a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.
Tubbs Jones, who represents the heavily Democratic 11th District, chairs the ethics committee in the House. She was also the first black woman to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

Earlier this week there rumors circulated that Bernie Mac had passed away. Unfortunately, the rumors seem to have taken on a prophetic eeriness, as the King of Comedy, Bernie Mac passed away this morning in Evanston, Illinois. Like so many, I remember Bernie Mac's debut on Def Comedy Jam when he came out announcing to the world, "I ain't scared of you mother f*ckers". Laughed so hard that I cried. Today, my heart aches.

wordless wednesday...congratulations a.s.b!
Posted by SjP in {meme} wordless wednesday, celebrating life, menu favorite

Right after her 16th birthday, my once very shy daughter "found" herself and I started calling her A Social Butterfly. How ironic that her initials are actually A.S.B., so A Social Butterfly just seemed to fit quite nicely.
So, these beautiful butterflies are dedicated to Our Boo (yes, we call her Boo, too). She's grown to be a beautiful and wonderful young lady who has the whole world ahead of her. I am very, very proud of her! Oh yeah, she's graduating with a B+ average and will be majoring in Criminal Justice in the Fall.

I've been so caught up with the Democratic Primary that I've paid little to no attention to what's been going on with NBA Championship. Now, I must admit that I'm not a real die-hard NBA fan (always ready for some football) but I do enjoy watching the Finals particularly when I like one of the teams or at least one or two of the players. Even it will be the Fourth of July before this year's Champion is crowned.
Just in case anyone missed it, the NBA Finals kicked off tonight. The much awaited for match-up between Kobe and Kevin is finally here. I'm so glad to see Kevin in the Finals that I don't even mind wanting the Celtics to win this one. What about Kobe, the Lakers, and Phil? Never liked Kobe (even before Colorado) and only liked the Lakers when there was Shaq, Magic, and yes even the Worm. Phil and the triangle offense, well that's all good - but, I got to go with Doc for this series.
Don't get me wrong! Kobe has much more than "game"! He's a phenomenal player and an amazing talent. Some even say he's better than Jordan. I didn't say that but some do. But for me, his arrogance has always gotten in the his way as far back as his refusal to play for any team other than the Lakers. Kevin, on the other hand, has always shown a humble and giving spirit. Except of course, when the cameras catch him cussing real good during a game. He got much props from me when he became his sister's guardian taking on parenting responsibilities when he was just a kid himself - albeit a millionaire. That to me showed a real sense of what's important and a level of maturity that most 19 years old don't even dream about let alone have.
These Finals are slated to be one of the most exciting in the last couple of years. We can expect to see a whole lot of high-flying, alley-ooping, fabulous dunking. I know in my house, I will hear D*MN and OH S*IT as Kevin and Kobe put on a show to get that ring.
Who and what I am today has been molded by who and what my Father was. While he was a first generation college graduate, I am a second generation college grad from the same university. Following in his footsteps, I have led a committed and dedicated life as an educator. Thanks to My Father, I can have a pretty good discussion on All Things Sports! And his love for track and field has been genetically passed to my oldest daughter who competes in the exact same events.
Today, had he lived, my Father would have been 79 years old. Inspite and despite all the challenges and issues that arose between my Father and I before he passed away, I loved my Daddy very much. My Father passed on Christmas Eve in 1983, and even after 24 years, I still miss him. And so, on this day, I say to "the Leaper", Happy Birthday!
