sunday inspirations...peace, be still

Posted by SjP in

And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him. From the Book of Mark, Fourth Chapter

As Gustav nears the Gulf toward New Orleans let us pray for all in its path. Let us pray for their safety. Let us pray that the wind and the rain are called to obey His Will - Peace, Be Still.

sojourner truth: ain't i a woman?

Posted by SjP in , ,

In concluding her speech at the Democratic National Convention, Senator Clinton recited the mantra coined by Harriet Tubman while leading slaves to freedom: "Keep going!" No matter what KEEP GOING! Whether Hillary's concluding words were a "play to the audience" or "from her heart" (as I do believe), she reminded us all of not only how far we as a people have come but also of the struggles, the triumphs, and often untold stories of African-American women who weaved the very fabric of this Nation.

Yet, when Governor Palin spoke yesterday, lauding over the accomplishments of Senator Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro in the political arena, she either forgot to or saw no need to include the late Honorable Shirley Chisholm among her political heroines. She either forgot to or saw no need to mention Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice - a Republican, the most powerful and influential woman in the world while paying tribute to women helping to crack the glass ceiling.

The Republicans continue to do nothing to extend a welcome to me, an African-American voter, in an effort to be inclusive. Their idea of outreach and inclusiveness is a billboard espousing that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. But I ask, does not the accomplishments of African American women matter? I ask, as the namesake of this blog asked in 1851: "Ain't I a Woman?.

That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain't I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain't I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man - when I could get it - and bear the lash as well! And ain't I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?

sarah palin: something just ain't right!

Posted by SjP in , ,

How in the world did we all miss the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's VEEP pick? This went over all of our heads and for the life of me, I don't know how or why. I'm telling you that SOMETHING JUST AIN'T RIGHT! SOMETHING IS VERY ROTTEN IN DENMARK - or shall I say Alaska.

Like everyone else, I am very surprised with the news that Alaskan Governor Palin was selected. I was sure it would be Romney. I was hoping that it would be Romney. Anyway, I intended this to be a post on Palin's gubernatorial race. Her platform. Her interests and passions related to the political arena in Alaska. So sure that I would be able to find out more about her in this regard, I Googled "Sarah Palin runs for Governor". BINGO! The following link popped up:
http://www.palinforgovernor.com/.

But, there's a problem! This link takes you directly to McCain's campaign site. Tried it again - same result. Each and every palinforgovernor.com link takes you directly to the McCain-Palin website - no matter what the extended address is. Why? Interesting.

What I found even more puzzling, after clicking through nearly 100 Google pages referencing Governor Palin, it became very clear that there has been and overt campaign throughout the blogosphere to draft Palin for the VEEP slot. Blog upon blog, internet media upon internet media, have been calling for this appointment since at least May of last year. Check a few
here, here, here, here, here, and here.

I ask you: How did Palin's selection fly so far under the radar when it was as plain as the nose on all of our faces? This was a clear and calculated move by McCain. And while, I believed that this was a decision McCain made on his own, I don't believe that anymore. He might not know anything about the internet - but his staffers sure do. And donned as "the most popular governor in the US"! Oh now, something just ain't right with this picture.

There is absolutely NO WAY that John McCain just made this decision. There is also NO WAY that John McCain made this decision after meeting her only one time. I simply DO NOT BELIEVE THAT HYPE! As I said: SOMETHING IS VERY ROTTEN IN DENMARK - or shall I say Alaska. Better watch this woman, because the next 2 months ain't going to be easy.

So, I still don't know anymore than Sarah Palin now than I knew when I decided the topic of this post. Sure, I've heard what everyone else has heard about this gun-toking, NRA card carrying, mother of 5, and former Pat Buchanan supporter - but nothing else. Well, that's not exactly true because I know she p*ssed me that while lauding over Hillary and Geraldine, she failed to mention that Shirley Chisholm also made history in her vie for the executive office.

But considering that she hasn't paid much attention to Iraq - I don't know why I would think that she would know or acknowledge history.

mlk was a republican. so what?

Posted by SjP in ,

The National Black Republican Association (NBRA) place 50 billboards in Denver proclaiming that Martin Luther King was a Republican. On their website, the NBRA espouses that Barack Obama is not Martin Luther King's Dream states that Obama's acceptance speech is "an apparent attempt to assume for himself the mantle of Dr. Martin Luther King." The NBRA further states that "Dr. King did not embrace the type of secularist agenda promoted by Obama and the Democratic Party of today, which includes fostering dependency on welfare that breaks up families, supporting same-sex marriage and partial-birth abortion, and banning God from the public square. Obama is no MLK!"

I doubt that Martin Luther King, Jr would embrace the type of secularist agenda promoted by John McCain and the Republican Party of today which includes the continuation of an unjust war in Iraq; the continuation of tax breaks for the rich and crumbs for the rest of us; the continuation of broken promises to adequately fund education so that our children might be able to acquire the American Dream; the continuation of inability for American citizens to receive quality and necessary health care because they don't have adequate health insurance; the continuation of policies and procedures which do nothing to protect our environment; the continuation policies and procedures which place Justices on the Supreme Court that will determine the presidency and take away our right to privacy.

Now, I don't know - nor do I even care - if Martin Luther King was a Republican. SO WHAT?But, what I care about and what I know about that the blood, sweat, tears, and life of MLK, and Malcolm, and Medgar, and so many others have brought us to this day. A day when at least one Black Man is not being judged by millions based on the color of his skin but on the content of his character. A Black Man, Barack Obama, who has a clear shot to be President of the United States.

And that, my dear NBRA members - is exactly what MLK Dreamed! And you should be ashamed of yourselves for marring this great and wonderful historic. How dare you!

thursday thirteen: it happened this week

Posted by SjP in ,

Thursday Thirteen is a fun meme revitalized by Danielle Vyas of ModernMusings.com. The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

This week I present 13 milestones in my life or that I've witnessed this week:

1. The "Social Butterfly" started college!

2,3, & 4. M. T., the eldest of the young SjPs started her sophomore year in college, announce that she would like to carry on the "pinkies up" legacy, and learned she made the Dean's List last semester!

5. My Mother turned 76.

6. My maternal Aunt, a breast cancer survivor, turned 78.

7. The Olympics in China ended, but the genocide in Darfur continues.

8. The "Social Butterfly" and I saw Carmello Anthony.

9. Hillary Clinton delivered one hell of a speech at the Democratic National Convention.

10. Former President Bill Clinton told the world that Barack Obama was able and capable to be the next President of the United States.

11. The PUMAs were declawed and told to "get over it".

12. Michelle Obama defined herself, her family, and her husband for the entire world in an up close and very personal speech during the Democratic National Convention.

and the ultimate...NUMBER 13: Last night, I watched an African-American, Barack Obama, be nominated by the Democratic Party FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES.

you good, obama! you good!

Talk about an offer you can't refuse! If you watched the roll call of delegates, then you have just witnessed the art of political maneuvering that was seamless, artful, and at its best.

While I was stewing over the fact that Obama had agreed to allow HRC's name to be placed into nomination, little did I know that Barack would employ some good old Chicago-style politics to let me know that he was still in control. {Standing Ovation & Hat Tip To You!}

So, what did he do, you ask? He gave HRC an offer she could not refuse. He said yes to placing her name in nomination - but at a real and significant price. The price was that New York would not cast its delegate votes but rather HRC would have to interrupt a roll call vote at a time when Barack had two-thirds of the delegate count and nominate him by acclamation. And just in case she reneged on the deal, well there was Illinois ready to step right on in. And no doubt the "story" would leak and thereby ruin any future political plans she would have. Dayum! Brilliant! Simply Brilliant! NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING 'BOUT!

McCain, word to the wise should be sufficient: I'd be real cool if I were you - cause this young man ain't no joke!

assassination attempt evidence not credible

Posted by SjP in

U.S. Atty. Troy Eid says that there "is no credible threat to the candidate". I say "YEAH! RIGHT!" Remember that little problem with Obama's plane? An FAA spokesperson said the problem with the plane "was never an issue." Then weeks later, we find out that the pilot did not have full control of the plane's up and down movements. At the time of this non-issue, the pilot told an FAA air traffic controller "at this time we would like to declare an emergency and also have CFR [crash equipment] standing by in St. Louis."

I'm just wondering when evidence becomes credible or an issue. After the plane crashes? After the towers fall? After the sniper hits his target from the book repository? When? Mr. Attorney General, I've been down this road before and I for one simply do not believe a word you are saying. Please do not insult my intelligence...it makes me angry when you insult my intelligence. And today, I just don't feel like being An Angry Black Woman!

passing the torch of power

Posted by SjP in

Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are indeed leaders of the Democratic Party. That is a fact that is undeniable. But, there is a difference between leadership and power. Afterall, the leader of the free world is George W. Bush but the power behind that leadership is Dick Chaney. Last night that power of Democratic Party - for so long held in the hands of the Kennedy's - was passed on to Barack Obama by Senator Ted Kennedy. Let us pray that the torch now passed will light his way to the White House.

sunday inspirations...prayer is like football

Posted by SjP in

Matt. 7:8 "For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."

Hello Lord, I love you.

I love you back, my son.

Sometimes when I want to pray I can't. I am too exhausted, too tired, too hurt, too wiped out, in too much pain…

Yes, I know about that and I am with you. You must remember that even when you cannot utter words, even when you have no words, you can be with me in a spirit of prayer. Prayer to me is like music coming from your soul just to me. Prayer is the way we connect. Even when you cannot utter one word but you come to me or even just want to come to me then I am glorified. Prayer is the most important part of life. No matter what you might have to go through during the day, the time we spend together in prayer is the most important.
What do I do when I cannot utter words or when I cannot even think of words. You can still pray by resting in me.
I see the intent of your heart. I see what goes on in your heart, mind, and soul. When you cannot utter thoughts or words, you can think about me. When you cannot utter thoughts or words, you can rest in my presence. When you cannot think of anything to say you can still connect to me by wanting to connect to me.
Sometimes it seems you do not answer.
I always listen. I always understand. I always know what you and others need. Yes, it may seem I do not answer but I do answer. I answer in ways you cannot know or understand. I answer in ways that you cannot even pray about for my ways are mysterious. My ways must remain mysterious for a time, but I always answer. When you pray for healing, although healing may not seem to come, healing will come at some point. When you pray for healing and the person you pray for comes to me after they leave their body there is more than healing. Healing of the body is not the ultimate gift I can give a person. The ultimate gift I can give a person was sent to you in the form of my Son who died upon the Cross. Through Christ and acceptance of Him in a person's heart and soul, there will come a day when healing happens by shedding the physical body and sailing away into my Light and Love and Heaven. When you leave your body you are healed but not just healed for you are given a new body. So when you pray for healing for the people on your list, someday they will be not just healed but transformed. I go beyond doing what you ask for. I go beyond answering what is prayed for. You would not believe it if I could show you how far I go beyond what you ask for in prayer. This is why prayer is so important. Prayer is the great shield between the evil of the world and you. Even when the evil one comes and tries to destroy you and destroy your body, when you pray there is a victory being assured in my heavenly realms. Think of prayer like football. Every time you pray you score points against the opponent. When you do not pray, the opponent scores points against you. When you do not pray, the points build up against you and you lose. The real winners in life are not the people who live a long time or who have money, wealth, fame, or position. The real winners in life are the people who pray to me in humility and contriteness.
I love people who pray and am able to do great works because they pray to me. When you pray in any form at all, you are talking to me. I am your father, your creator God. I want you to always be talking to me. Always be in my presence no matter what your mood, your emotions, your feeling, your thoughts, no matter what, I want you to be talking to me. Even when you cannot think of anything to say to me, you can be with me in your heart. When you are with me in your heart, you are in prayer with me. Imagine what the world would be like if everyone prayed all the time. Imagine what a different place the world would be. In heaven, all the beings on all the levels pray all the time. We all connect in this supernatural glorious way. In heaven, all the spirits rise all the time. We are in infinite motion rising all the time for we cannot be kept down. In heaven, we are sailing upwards all the time. On earth, when you are bound by your body, and because of the physical and emotional pain of life, you cannot sail upwards except when you pray. When you are alive on earth, you build up fuel for your journey upwards throughout eternity when you pray. When you pray there are ripples of my love that go throughout the world to people you do not know. When you pray for one person then others are receiving my love. When you pray for all the people you know, then all those people receive my love and people beyond them receive my love.

Lord, in our world today it looks like we are at the end of all things. It looks like the end of our lives and way of life. It looks like even our freedom of worship can be taken away along with our families and people we know. When we pray, what happens to this world? When we pray, does it make any difference in the war against darkness and evil?

Yes, it does make a difference. It makes an enormous difference. Like I said before, think what a dark world the world would be if no one prayed. The amount of prayers prayed by the number of people praying by the intensity of the prayer in their heart makes up a supernatural equation. The prayers people pray determine many things in the world. The prayers determine the future of the world. Jesus did not know when the end of all things was to come and when He would come back to you because of the prayer equation. Prayer is the determining factor in nearly all events. Imagine how important prayer is and you cannot imagine enough! If all people prayed at the same time on the earth, then things would change immediately. When people of the earth do not pray, then things devolve. It makes no difference whether people pray with their lips, mouth, or vocal chords, as some believe. When you pray, you must pray in your heart of hearts. When you pray, come to me and I will hear you for I love you, and I will always love you. I will always hear you and I will do what you ask me but you may not know the time, place, or circumstances of my answers. Feel my presence in your heart. Feel my descending beam of love coming over you. Feel my uplifting and upwelling power from within you. Rest in my hiding place within the great dome of heaven where we can always meet. I love you my Son.

I love you Lord.

Thank you my son. I love you back. Give my words away and feed my sheep.

so glad its so, joe!

Posted by SjP in ,

Broke this story last night. Now its official. Got my text message and everybody's reporting it now! CNN, Faux News, and Associated Press are confirming reports from Democratic sources that Obama has chosen Joe Biden as his running mate.

Boy! Ain't it just like a Brother to keep you waiting? Damn, Barack! We been waitin' all day and half the night for you to tell us. But, I ain't mad at you cause, I'm real happy that you picked my man from Delaware! I know that many folks will have a problem with Joe Biden, cause he does come with a certain amount of baggage.

Many can't forget the "clean and articulate" remark assuming that it was an illustration of some racial issue he may harbor. And the plagiarism charge will no doubt haunt him throughout the campaign as it did when he ran for POTUS in 1988 against Dukakis. But, I really believe that the "articulate" remark was an "open mouth insert foot" (Joe, you gotta watch that foot, though). The plagiarism - well, that was really just crap - and given the fact that we've already gone down that road during this campaign season, that is just water under the damn.

Biden understands that Roe v Wade is less about pro-life or choice but rather the fundamental reaffirmation of our RIGHT TO PRIVACY as American citizens. He recognizes that having a law degree or having served on a bench does not a SUPREME COURT JUSTICE MAKE. And he is the right addition on the Obama ticket in the area of Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security.

He is, in my opinion, a straight-shooter who never fails to speak his mind and calling bulls*it by its rightful name...BULLS*IT! Don't mind saying it here - in fact, I think I've probably said it before - Biden was my first choice in this race for the White House. So, I real glad its so, Joe!

thursday thirteen...movie quotes

Posted by SjP in ,

Thursday Thirteen is a fun meme revitalized by Danielle Vyas of ModernMusings.com. The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!

This week I present quotes from 3 of my favorite movies, see if you can guess what they are...

  1. Drugs is a dirty business.
  2. If history has taught us anything. It's that you can kill anyone.
  3. Good health is the most important thing. More than success. More than money. More than power.
  4. Every family has bad memories.
  5. I have a sentimental weakness for my children. And I spoil them as you can see. They talk instead of listen.
  6. When the mind suffers, the body cries out.
  7. You talk about vengeance. Is vengeance going to bring your son back to you or my boy back to me?
  8. I'd hoped that we could come here and reason together. And as a reasonable man I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to find a peaceful solution to this problem.
  9. Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement.
  10. Leave the gun. Take the canolies.
  11. It seems in today's world the power to absolve debt is greater than the power of forgiveness.
  12. Your sins are terrible and it is just that you suffer.

and the ultimate...NUMBER 13: Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!

And if you don't know the names of the movies by now, here's your last and final clue: I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.

lt. dan, we're waiting for your flip flop

Posted by SjP in

Did Lt. Dan really imply that he's considering re-enacting the draft if elected President? Surely, he misunderstood the question and as a result, once again, misspoke. Either way, and as my cousin says "It Don't Look Good!" It will be very interesting to see Lt. Dan worm his feeble a$$ out of this one.

Here's the question: Senator McCain I truly hope you get the opportunity to chase Bin Laden right to the gates of hell and push him in as you stated on your forum. I do have a question though. Disabled veterans, especially in this state, have horrible conditions [...] My son is an officer in the Air Force, and I am a vet and I was raised in a military family. I think it is a sad state of affairs when we have illegal aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top physicians, the best of medical and our vets can’t even get to a doctor. These are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don’t reenact the draft I don’t think we will have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.

Here's Lt. Dan's answer: Ma’am let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you said and thank you and I am grateful for your support of all of our veterans.

And just in case reading is not believing, let's go to the video tape.

Can't wait to hear what he really means; or in other words how he lies his way out of this one. Wonder if Canada is planning on closing its borders for fear of an immigration surge from the south reminiscent of the 60's?

update: stephanie tubbs jones...our prayers are with you!

Posted by SjP in ,

UPDATE: Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, according to medical officials, died today after suffering an aneurysm.

U.S. Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress, was hospitalized Wednesday after suffering an aneurysm. The news conference indicates that she is in critical condition, although CNN had earlier reported that the Congresswoman had passed away. I urge all Sojourners to keep Congresswoman Jones in our thoughts and prayers.

First elected in 1998, Tubbs Jones was one of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's biggest boosters during the primaries. She backed Barack Obama in June and is a superdelegate at next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Tubbs Jones, who represents the heavily Democratic 11th District, chairs the ethics committee in the House. She was also the first black woman to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

sojourner's place brilliant? much obliged!

Much obliged to fellow Entrecard Dropper, Isabella Mori of Change Therapy for humbling Sojourner's Place with the Brilliant Weblog Award for the recently created "Slave" Narratives Open Thread. And to think I've been considering discontinuing the weekly thread due to low activity, but not any more!

I urge all Sojourners to take some time to drop by Isabella's where she's committed to "making lives better, making better lives".
In receiving this award, I am to nominate at least 7 brilliant blogs. Now that is really difficult, as there are so many brilliant blogs deserving of this award. Awardees, are encouraged to:

1. Add the logo of the award to your blog
2. Add a link to the person who awarded it to you
3. Nominate at least 7 other blogs
4. Add links to those blogs on your blog
5. Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs

The Brilliant Blogs I am nominating for this award are:

1. Black On Campus: I am a life-long student of higher education, and Ajuan continues to teach me lessons I never knew.

2. Black Women, Blow the Trumpet: When I need dig deep and be challenged about my own personal "isms", this is where I go. Word to the wise should be sufficient, Lisa don't allow no perps at her place so you better come real!

3. Gina of What About Our Daughters for having the "audacity" to enlist a cadre of bloggers and launch the Michelle Obama Watch, a repository of all of the criticism, praise, and general chicanery thrown at Michelle Obama between now and November. Its an honor to be a part of this effort.

4. Field Negro: it is probable that each and every Afrosphere or AfroSpear blogger is well aware of the hard-hitting brilliance of Field. And that's all I got to say about that!

5. The Marvalus View: Ms. Marva's 10Spot is simply a joy to read each week. She let's us have a peek into what she's feeling right now! Oh yeah, she is also one of the co-"founders" of Old School Friday...and where would we be without that!

6. Regina's Family Seasons: Class! Dignity! Integrity! Brilliant...and an inspiration to me!

7. Ebony Report: This is a spot that I just truly like and enjoy! As the tag line says, this blog presents provocative African-American news and commentary to enlighten and uplift.

8. Modern Musings: Whether for human rights in Darfur or calling for the reinvestigation of LaVena Johnson's death, Danielle uses her blog to advocate for what's right.

9. From My Brown Eyed View: Ms Lady Deborah, what can I say about this spot and blogger! Always on point and always looking out! Much obliged for all you do!

10. Raw Dawg Buffalo: in SjP's humble opinion, "My Daddy didn't name me Dr." aka Jones represents the best that the blogosphere has to offer. Real, and never shallow, he speaks on fatherhood, politics, the economy and so much more. When visiting this blog for the first time, you might want to take along copies of an "urban dictionary" and the latest scientific journal to help you translate, but believe me it will be worth it. Now, I see he already got one of these awards, but I don't care cuz Jones deserve anuther one from ole SjP! So, na he got 2.

Congratulations to all awardees and much obliged, Isabella for the recognition.

fishburne joining "csi" las vegas

Posted by SjP in ,

Now I must admit that when I heard the William Peterson was leaving the original CSI cast, I was shocked and more than a little dismayed. I like him and especially his bowed legs!

O.K., so I digressed a bit.

But, news hot off the wire reports that Laurence Fishburne will play a college lecturer and former pathologist who is focused on why people commit acts of violence. And just like Gil, Fishburne's character also has an interesting twist. Gil had a deep connection to bugs, and Fishburne's character has a deep connection to his work, having a genetic profile has been identified in serial killers. Now, this I got to see at least once cause I'm really not too sure that I like the implication here, so I'll hold judgement until the Fall.

And what about Warrick Brown, played by Gary Dourdan. Although I missed the season finale, my Aunt says that it appeared that Brown was shot in the head right at the end, and therefore presumed dead. Seems that Dourdan is moving on. Good-bye Warrick...Hello Fishburne...Now that's all I got to say about that!

sunday inspirations...crossing a destination yet unknown

Posted by SjP in , ,

Today's Sunday Inspirations is an account of an experience I had earlier this year which, I shared here at Sojourner's Place. I often think about this brief experience as it has left a lasting impression on me. It has been said, that when something happens to you that is so profound that it stays with you that it is the voice of God telling you to take heed and listen.

Crossing a Destination Yet Unknown

This morning, I had a very interesting, strange and inspiring experience. On my way to perform my civic duty (I’ll talk about that in a future post) I encountered an elderly man attempting to cross the street with a walker. Just prior to my approaching him, I heard him ask a woman for assistance. Blurting out something in what I considered in a tone both rude and disrespectful, the woman quickly scurried away leaving him to fend for himself.

Obviously afraid to cross the street during its downtown morning rush – I offered to help the Elder. As one would expect, he was extremely grateful and we began our two block walk to his destination. During that walk, I learned that he was a retired CPA, had suffered a stroke about a year ago, and that his doctor – a woman – suspected that he would have to continue to use the walker for at least another six months. The Elder is the father of three; two sons, both engineers and a real estate agent daughter.

This elder spoke to me about many things during our walk including Islam and its tenants regarding the importance of women and mothers and the need to respect one another. He spoke of how ants will help each other to survive in their world in the absence of competition. He said that only humans feel the need for competition, degradation, and humiliation against one another creating divides, hatred, and the inability to coexist.

Reaching his destination, I knew that he would have to climb about 4 concrete steps. I remained at the bottom of the steps and helped him to steady himself by holding onto the railing. Once steadied, I took is walker to the landing and then returned to the Elder to assist him up the stairs. The doorman – who was watching all of this – then, assisted him into the business establishment. Before saying our farewells, the Elder said to me, “I asked God to send someone to help me cross that street. And he sent you. He sent you – the nice lady with a pretty smile – a lady who is now my daughter.” The Elder then kissed my hand and blessed me with a good and prosperous life. I thanked him, claimed the blessing, and proceeded to my destination to perform my civic duty.

Everything happens for a reason. And while I may have been placed at the right time and place to help the Elder cross the street, I sincerely believe that this unknown Elder was placed at that spot to safely cross ME to a destination yet unknown.
