blogging for troy davis...much obliged!
Posted by SjP in calling all sojourners, justice for all, much obliged, trophy room
But, let us not forget that Troy is not the only one on death row in the states or throughout the world. There are those who are in favor of the death penalty and those who are not. But, everyone will agree that no individual should be put to death for a crime that he or she did not commit. On that fact we can and must all agree. In accordance with the "rules", participation is optional and you may pass on this award whether you display it or not. You may, however, pass it on to as few or as many bloggers you wish. If you do pass it on, just link to the person who sent it to you as well to those you pass it on to. Pass the award not only to bloggers who write primarily about racism, but to bloggers who have written insightful posts on the subject as well. Once again, Much Obliged! Very Much Obliged!
Much obliged to all Sojourner's who answered the call to action on behalf of Troy Davis on May 19. While I am very appreciative of your participation, the fact that our collective voices may stir the heart and soul of Gov. Perdue to grant clemency to a man who may well be innocent. As I wrote to AfroSpear members:
Many Sojourners answered this call to action and those who either provided me with a link to their posts or posts I found while sojourning the blogosphere are listed below. If your post link is not listed, please drop it in the comment section here and I will add it.
Global Day of Blogging for Action for Troy Davis Participants:
As simple words are just not adequate to show just how thankful I am to each of the bloggers listed here, I am passing on the Shades of Black and White Award to each of you. Tricia from The Girl Who Wears My Shoes, was inspired by Shirl the owner of the blog for which this award was name; and as such I am very humbled to have been among the first to receive this award directly from Shirl. This award is passed along to deserving bloggers who are committed to bridge the gap of racism due to their passionate writing, their excellent communication skills, their courage to "put it out there" and because they truly care about the only race that matters, the human race.

Alluring: The 'D' Spot: I always look forward to OSF and sojourning over to Keith's. You know he's always going to be thinking outside the box with an OS jam that just makes you say "yep! that's the one!" Amusing: Aunt Jamima's Revenge: I love the quick wit of Professor Tracy over at Aunt Jamima's Revenge. But, don't understand me, while Professor Tracy manages to to weave wit and musings into many of her posts - the issues she writes about are no laughing matter. Just like the name of her spot, which I think tells it all. The Happy Go Lucky Bachelor: Now what can I say about Mike? There is never a dull moment at his pad. More times than not, I wonder just where he finds some of the things he posts. Like he says in his header, you got to have a sense of humor cause if you don't you'll miss the message. Glad you're back, Mike! Bewitching: Ugly Black John: When I'm about to sojourn over to John's, I have to make sure that I have my mind open and ready for a real lesson. He has a way of turning an issue or event on its head and then inside out. Be ready to be completely captivated when you enter this Brother's spot who describes himself as "really not ugly...not good looking either...I just look like I'm good looking". Impressive: African American Opinion: AAPP aka LN Rock created this political and social networking ning for African-Americans. How he keeps up with with AAO and two other blogs, I'll never know. But, I am certainly impressed with this "old school brother who gives his thoughts, opinions and insights on political and social issues of the day". Inspiring: Anyway I Have To: His blog handle is The U, this brothers spot is simply inspiring. He writes from the very depths of his being and shares it with us. The U certainly does it and does it anyway he has to. I hope that one day he'll decide to share his writings in a book. I'd certainly be first in line to buy it. Hagar's Daughters: "For women who find themselves at the well...praying, crying, dancing, & pondering (& the men who join them there)". Anyone not inspired by the title and description of HG's blog simply has no soul. This sister provides a source of inspiration to me to keep on PUSHing. No matter how bad things might seem, there is always something to be thankful for. I truly get inspiration from her strength. My Brown-Eyed View: My sister Ms Lady Deborah has got to be the most active advocate in the entire sphere. From information on the evironment to genocide to human rights to injustice you will find it here at MBEV. The Certain Sound: All I got to say is that if and when I ever get to Toledo, I'm going to make it a point to visit Revy Rev's church. I'm going to make sure I get there early so that I can have a seat on the aisle. I have no doubt that his posts and comments are mirror images of his sermons and that Sunday may be the very first time that old SjP here gets the spirit - holy dance and all. I hope you will take the time to sojourn over to these alluring, bewitching, inspiring, and impressive blogs. And to the recipients, ya'll keep doing what you doing and I'll be forever MUCH OBLIGED! Obliged to you for hearing me,
Much obliged to Villager of Electronic Village who recently passed on the Splash Award to Sojourner's Place. This award given to alluring, amusing, bewitching, impressive and inspiring blogs. He says of this spot in bestowing the award that Sojourner's Place - SjP created one of the most alluring blogs in the afrosphere. I love the look, feel and content of her blog. Given yesterday's post, you know I'm really liking that "alluring" description. lol
In passing on the Splash Award, I am to select up to 9 blogs I find alluring, amusing, bewitching, impressive, and inspring to me. The rest of the rules are:
1. Put the logo on your blog post.
2. Nominate up to 9 blogs which allure, amuse, bewitch, impress or inspire you.
3. Be sure to link to your nominees within your post.
4. Let them know that they have been splashed by commenting on their blog.
5. Remember to link to the person from whom your received your Splash award.
My selections for each of the categories are:

happy new year...much obliged and paying forward!

It is hard to believe that one year ago today, January 1, 2008, the doors of Sojourner's Place opened officially with a post entitled, Being Black in the Workplace. It was hard going there for a while, as I had no idea back then for what I was doing. But, something wonderful has happened and not SjP's has become an integral part of my life!
Today, 378 posts later, Sojourner's Place a rank of #65 on Villager's Black Blog Rankings for December 2008 out of 1516 blogs; a 1001 Technorati blog reactions and a rank somewhere between 119 - 130 (provided Technorati's system is working correctly); a recipient of 20 awards, recognitions, and honors. I am very proud to have been nominated for and received 2009 Black Web Best Commenter Award, it really does pale next to the first awards received. The first from Ms. Marva of The Marvalus View, the Rose Award and the second, from Yobachie of BlackPerspective.Net, the E for Excellent Award. And, I will be forever humbled with two of my posts being recognized and found worthy of two awards. The first, Saggin' Pants, was presented the Rising Blogger Award from Mimi Lenox of Mimi Writes. My favorite post and most personally profound, Crossing To A Destination Yet Unknown, was recently recognized as one of the best posts of 2008 by The Best Post of the Week blog.
So when a milestone is reached in the life of Sojourner's Place, The Emblem of the Helping Hand is passed along as my way of saying Much Obliged, Very Much Obliged to those who made it possible for ole SjP to keep on going. Therefore, I am passing on the first Emblems of 2009 and the 4th round of recipients from Sojourner's Place to the following spots because y'all give me the strength and encouragement to carry on and keep on telling the truth according to SjP!
The Certain Sound ~~ Ugly Black John ~~ Traces of a Stream ~~ Sankofa ~~ Bent Society ~~ When Least Expected
The rules for displaying and passing on the emblem on, are found at the official Emblem of the Helping Hand blog. I encourage all Sojourners to visit the recent recipients of the Emblem and give them a congrats and a much obliged for all they do.
Congratulations to all new, past, and future recipients of the Emblem. Remember to pay it forward. And as always, Much Obliged...Very Much Obliged!

ClnMike of The Happy Go Lucky Bachelor bestowed on old SjP the Uber Amazing Award! Mike, you are too kind and Much Obliged for finding Sojourner's Place worthy of such a prestigious award. Those of you who know Mike know that he's always got something cooking over at his bachelor pad. Be prepared to be informed, shocked, and amused. It's never dull at THGLB!
The Uber Amazing Blog Award is given to sites that: inspire you, make you smile and laugh, give amazing information, are a great read, have an amazing design, and/or any other reason that makes them Uber Amazing!
So I'm giving this out to those Blogs that I find entertaining and very good reads.
1. Ajuan of Black on Campus. I truly love this blog! As a "student of higher education", I an always amazed of how much I don't know about this field in which I have spent all of my adult life. You gotta check out her Wordless Wednesdays! The are just awesome!
2. Blog Queen of Sagacious Ramblings. I gonna start calling this sister the Scoop Queen cause she never fails to get the news before everyone else. Her perspective is always right on, and I just love how she puts folks in their place when the show that they don't have no type of home training.
3. Villager of Electronic Village. Need I say more? Probably not - but I got to! Villager always keeps it real and right on time. He always speaks from the heart and tells it like it is. He keeps us all informed no matter the topic. Can I say that he's my hero? Just did!
4. Cedric of Notes of this Native Son. I get by Cedric's spot not nearly enough. But, this is a brother who is oh so inspiring. He deep y'all; and I hope you check him out especially his "Pardon Me" series.
5. Roderick of When Least Expected. This is a brother whom I've enjoyed conversations with off-blog. He not only blogs but he writes, too. His latest book, Steppin’ Out Of The Darkness, “When Good People Become Great”, is on my Christmas List (I didn't forget - smile). I'm predicting great things from this inspiring brother.
6. Ms Lady Deborah of From My Brown Eyed View. Named one of the 60 Influential Bloggers by AAPP, all you got to do is swoop by her spot and you'll know why. This my girl! Like the sister I never had even if it is in the blogosphere.
The rules for the award are as follows:
1. Put the logo (award image) on your blog or in a post.
2. Nominate at least 5 blogs that you feel are Uber Amazing!
3. Let them know that they have received the Uber Amazing Blog Award by commenting on their blog.
4. Share the love by linking to this post and the person you received the award from.

My on-line blogging sistah, Ms. Lady Deborah over at My Brown Eyed View, gave Sojourner's Place an award last week. I got a feeling that me and Ms. Deborah are related cause we are so much alike. She is truly a great friend and I hope we meet in person someday when/if we get to each others' sides of the plantation. So, needless to say that receiving the Superior Scribbler Award from my good friend is really a humbling honor.
Now, as with most awards, this one also comes with some rules and here they are:
- Each Superior Scribbler must in turn pass The Award on to 5 most-deserving Bloggy Friends.
- Each Superior Scribbler must link to the author & the name of the blog from whom he/she has received The Award.
- Each Superior Scribbler must display The Award on his/her blog, and link to This Post, which explains The Award.
- Each Blogger who wins The Superior Scribbler Award must visit this post and add his/her name to the Mr. Linky List. That way, we'll be able to keep up-to-date on everyone who receives This Prestigious Honor!
- Each Superior Scribbler must post these rules on his/her blog.
1. Revvy Rev of The Certain Sound
2. Clmike of The Happy Go Lucky Bachelor
3. Keith of The "D" Spot
4. Yobachi of BlackPerspective.net
5. UBJ of Ugly Black John
There are so many other Brothas in the Afrosphere doing it and doing it well; but alas I could pass this award on to only five. Please check them out if you have not already done so. And don't forget to check out my girl, Ms. Lady Deborah. Much obliged, girlfriend! Very much obliged.

This has been an amazing week over here at Sojourner's Place! And it is just fitting that I share my good fortune with others. Kind of like "sharing the wealth".
So, this morning I'm passing on The Helping Hand Emblem as my way of saying Much Obliged when Sojourner's Place experiences blog-milestone. Started on June 29, 2008, the purpose of the The Helping Hand Emblem, is two-fold. First, it recognizes bloggers who have gone well beyond the call of duty by your continued efforts to "leave the pile higher than you found it" for new bloggers. And second, it says to the new blogger to keep up the good work and you're on the right track even if you think you're not.
This third group of recipients of the Emblem, keep me going day after day. Whether I'm sojourning to your spot or you to mine, you never fail to motivate me to be the best blogger I can be. Therefore, it is with a great deal of humility and appreciation that I pass on the Emblem of the Helping Hand to the following blogs. You know the mantra...Much Obliged! Very Much Obliged!
I encourage all Sojourners to visit the recent recipients of the Emblem and give them a congrats and a much obliged for all they do.
Past recipients of the Emblem passed on by Sojourner's Place:

Yes! I'm demanding a recount! I just can't believe that Sojourner's Place was not only nominated but WON the 2009 Black Web Award in the Best Commentator category. Somebody pinch me! I'm over here feeling like Sally Feilds "you like me...you really like me"!
Words can not express how humbled I am with receiving this award. Y'all all know that I'm still pretty new at blogging, having launched my first official post on January 1 of this year. During that time, Sojourner's Place has gone threw a whole lot of looks and directions as I tried to find my voice - or as Villager says - my flow. I so appreciate your patience, continued support and encouragement. Much obliged, y'all! Very Much Obliged!
Special H/T to the Torrence, Raw Dawg Buffalo, for "droppin' the dime", or else I never would have known. I owe you big time!
Please make sure to send a shot of congrats to other 2009 recipients you might know, including:
Barack Obama.com - Most Important Site for Black America & Most Original Site
Black Women in Europe Blog - Best Black European Site
Black Blog Watch - Best Black Blog Directory
You Betta Recognize - Best Education
Raw Dawg Buffalo - Best Business & Political
Black Tennis Pros - Best Site for Athletes
And while the 2009 Black Web Award is truly an honor, it pales by comparison to the award recently received from Villager. Earlier this week, he bestowed on Sojourner's Place the "I Love Your Blog" Award. To be donned by you, Villager, as one of your "favorite blogs in the universe" is truly overwhelming. Cause, if SjP's could be even a tenth of what Electronic Village is, I will have died and gone to blog heaven. This recognition coming from you means more than I can ever express in mere words. You gotta know that you are my hero!
Between the "I Love Your Blog" and "Black Web" Awards, you gotta know that I have to share these blog blessings. So, this week-end I will be handing out some "Emblems of the Helping Hand" as my way of simply saying Much Obliged and Paying it Forward.
P.S. Did Barack kick butt tonight or what? "cool-cool/ super-cool/ real cool" Barack!
Obliged to you for hearing me,

> > >SjP's truth continues

I know I've been slacking over the last couple of weeks. Haven't been dropping by like I use to or even having the opportunity to speak my own truths here at SjP's. For this I really do apologize, but time just seems to get away from me.
This is the reason why I was so surprised a few days ago when I learned that Sojourner's Place had been humbled with awards from two amazing bloggers: Wayne of Electronic Village and Believer1964 of Miscellaneous Matters.
Much obliged to the griot himself, Wayne of Electronic Village, for presenting Sojourner's Place with the Blogging Star Award. Barb, who blogs over at Skittles' Place, created this award for those who shine their light throughout the Blogosphere. Some do it with humor, others with creativity, and others with their kind and thoughtful natures. We all know more than a few of them so why not give them some recognition?"It is my pleasure to spread the love to others for the second year in the row. In humbling SjP's with this award, Villager writes:
Sojourner's Place - This blog is designed from the perspective of the professional African American woman ... however, I think that nubian brothers benefit from the wisdom of Sojourner as well. Sojourner created the Helping Hand Award and Sunday Inspirations. All villagers need to check this blog out. I'm pleased to be able to present Sojourner's Place with this award.
I'm passing the Blogging Star Award to: Miscellaneous Matters, The Synergistic Pen, Musings About A Muddled World, Sagacious Rambling, and Black On Campus.
As a recipients of this award, you are encouraged to: 1/ display it on your blog along with a link to who gave it to you; 2/ mention that it originated at Skittles' Place so Barb can follow it's journey; and 3/ Pass it on to any blogger(s) you think should have it.
Much obliged to Believer1964 of Miscellaneous Matters who always posts a soulful and rocking beat on OSFs. She humbled Sojourner's Place with the Certified Honest Blogger Award. If you need a daily dose of inspiration, believe me Believer's messages never miscellaneous and they always matter! So, in passing on the Certified Honest Blogger Award, the recipients of the Blogger Star Award get a two-fer. In addition, I'm also passing this award to: Electronic Village, SANKOFA, The Happy Go Lucky Bachelor
As a recipient of this award, you are encouraged to: 1/write a post showing it, together with the name of who has given it to you, and link them back; 2/select at least 7 blogs that you find brilliant in their content or design; 3/show their names and links and leave them a comment informing they were prized with ‘Honest Weblog’; 4/ show a picture of those who awarded you and those you give the prize (optional); 5/ pass it on!
Congratulations to all! You each give me motivation and energy to keep on trying to speak the truth here at SjP's! And much obliged, very much obliged to Villager and Believer for finding SjP's worthy!
Speak the Truth!
Obliged to you for hearing me, and now old SjP ain't got nothing more to say.
sojourner's place brilliant? much obliged!

Much obliged to fellow Entrecard Dropper, Isabella Mori of Change Therapy for humbling Sojourner's Place with the Brilliant Weblog Award for the recently created "Slave" Narratives Open Thread. And to think I've been considering discontinuing the weekly thread due to low activity, but not any more!
I urge all Sojourners to take some time to drop by Isabella's where she's committed to "making lives better, making better lives".
In receiving this award, I am to nominate at least 7 brilliant blogs. Now that is really difficult, as there are so many brilliant blogs deserving of this award. Awardees, are encouraged to:
1. Add the logo of the award to your blog
2. Add a link to the person who awarded it to you
3. Nominate at least 7 other blogs
4. Add links to those blogs on your blog
5. Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs
The Brilliant Blogs I am nominating for this award are:
1. Black On Campus: I am a life-long student of higher education, and Ajuan continues to teach me lessons I never knew.
2. Black Women, Blow the Trumpet: When I need dig deep and be challenged about my own personal "isms", this is where I go. Word to the wise should be sufficient, Lisa don't allow no perps at her place so you better come real!
3. Gina of What About Our Daughters for having the "audacity" to enlist a cadre of bloggers and launch the Michelle Obama Watch, a repository of all of the criticism, praise, and general chicanery thrown at Michelle Obama between now and November. Its an honor to be a part of this effort.
4. Field Negro: it is probable that each and every Afrosphere or AfroSpear blogger is well aware of the hard-hitting brilliance of Field. And that's all I got to say about that!
5. The Marvalus View: Ms. Marva's 10Spot is simply a joy to read each week. She let's us have a peek into what she's feeling right now! Oh yeah, she is also one of the co-"founders" of Old School Friday...and where would we be without that!
6. Regina's Family Seasons: Class! Dignity! Integrity! Brilliant...and an inspiration to me!
7. Ebony Report: This is a spot that I just truly like and enjoy! As the tag line says, this blog presents provocative African-American news and commentary to enlighten and uplift.
8. Modern Musings: Whether for human rights in Darfur or calling for the reinvestigation of LaVena Johnson's death, Danielle uses her blog to advocate for what's right.
9. From My Brown Eyed View: Ms Lady Deborah, what can I say about this spot and blogger! Always on point and always looking out! Much obliged for all you do!
10. Raw Dawg Buffalo: in SjP's humble opinion, "My Daddy didn't name me Dr." aka Jones represents the best that the blogosphere has to offer. Real, and never shallow, he speaks on fatherhood, politics, the economy and so much more. When visiting this blog for the first time, you might want to take along copies of an "urban dictionary" and the latest scientific journal to help you translate, but believe me it will be worth it. Now, I see he already got one of these awards, but I don't care cuz Jones deserve anuther one from ole SjP! So, na he got 2.
Congratulations to all awardees and much obliged, Isabella for the recognition.
Speak the Truth!
Obliged to you for hearing me, and now old SjP ain't got nothing more to say.

thursday thirteen: much obliged and paying forward
Posted by SjP in helping hand, menu favorite, miscellaneous matters, much obliged
Much obliged to my blogging sister, Danielle Vyas of ModernMusings.com, for revitalizing this weekly meme called Thursday Thirteen. The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!
Danielle used this meme to recognize her Twitter "friends and followers". I'm so glad to be among her "crew" and in fact, she was the first to begin to follow me on Twitter. Much obliged Danielle, still learning how to make Twitter work for me :>).
Anyway, the last couple of weeks have brought Sojourner's Place several blogging surprises including nominations for the Black Blog and Black Weblog Awards, the recipient of a Rising Blogger Award for the Saggin' Pants post, moving up in Villagers BBR to 114 out of 1329 blogs, and reaching a Technorati Authority over 100! All this, and Monday (8/11) is my birthday! Whoopie!
So, in coming up with my Thursday Thirteen, I am passing on the second The Emblem of the Helping Hand to 13 bloggers who have shown Sojourner's Place much love and support. Much obliged y'all for all you do! Go here to find out more about the Emblem and how to display it on your site.
Much obliged to each and everyone of you! Couldn't do it without you!

say what? sojourner's place a 2009 black web award nominee?
Posted by SjP in c'mon now, menu favorite, much obliged, trophy room
I'm about to pass out over her at SjP's. I went to Black TV Online so I could cast my vote for fellow AfroSpear blog "Black Women in Europe" a nominee for the Best European Blog. After doing so, I decided to browse thru the other categories and cast my vote for several I knew would be nominated. I get to the Best Online Commentator and I see Sojourner's Place. I say to myself "d*mn! somebody done gone and stole the name of my blog!"
With a neck snap and a head roll I click on the url to see just how long this Sojourner's Place had been open. Operating on the "wish factor" I'm wishing this blog started after Januray 1, 2008 and is on blogspot. So, I'm sitting here waiting for this chick's site to load and D*AMN! Not only did she take my name, but....WAIT! Oh S*IT OH MY! SAY WHAT?! YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING! ITS ME!
Sojourner's Place has been nominated for the 2009 Black Web Award for Best Online Commentator. Given the quality and depth of other nominees in this category, well, let me just say that it is an honor just to be nominated.
I urge you to go to the 2009 Black Web Awards site and cast your vote for your favorite blogs. You'll find many of them nominated and you can even "write-in" your favorites. In fact, your blog may be among them - so you'll want to be sure and check. Voting ends in October and you want vote early and often. Here are some that you won't want to over look:
Best Black Website Directory
Most Important Site for Black America
Best Online Commentator
Best Black European Site
Best Black Blog Directory
Best Blog
Best Blog – Africa
Best Blog – Culture
Best Blog – Education
Most Original Blog
Best Lifestyle Blog
Best Business & Political Blog
Best Christian Blog
Best Gossip Blog or site
Best Site for Black Athletes
Congratulations to all of the nominees. All are very deserving...perhaps, with the exception of one {smile}. But, much obliged to the individual who thought Sojourner's Place deserving of such a distinguished honor.
Speak the Truth!
